Feedback: Do I have to beg? Summary: Melody turns 16 and makes her way to Sunnydale. Note: // signal a flashback ************************************************************************ Tomorrow was Melody’s sixteenth birthday. She couldn’t wait. Tomorrow was the day that she would inherit her mother’s powers. She still remembered the first time her mother had told her about it. She and her mother had always been close since Melody’s father had left before she was even born. Melody had been seven years old when her mother had told her that they needed to talk. Melody had thought she was in trouble but instead her mother had sat her down and told her a story. //Melody’s mother picked her up and sat her in her lap. “Melody,” she said. “I need to tell you a story. In ancient times, it was said that the goddess Selene drove the moon across the sky. Each night she followed her brother, Helios, the sun, to catch his fiery rays and reflect the light back to earth. One night on her journey, she looked down and saw Endymion sleeping in the hills. She fell in love with the beautiful shepherd. Night after night she looked down on his gentle beauty and loved him more, until finally one evening she left the moon between the sun and the earth and went down to the grassy fields to lie beside him. For three nights she stayed with him, and the moon, unable to catch the sun’s rays, remained dark. They said it brought death and freed evil forces to roam the black night. Zeus, King of the Gods, was angered by the darkness and punished Selene by giving Endymion eternal sleep. Selene returned to the moon and drove it across the night sky, but her love was too strong. She hid Endymion in a cave; and now, three nights each lunar month, she leaves the moon to visit her sleeping lover and cover him with silver kisses. He gave Selene a daughter to guard the night. She is powerful and beautiful like her mother, and mortal like her father.” She paused and looked at Melody before continuing, “The daughter was given three powers to help her, the power to read minds, the power to see the future, and the power to turn invisible. We are descendents of this daughter. Each daughter’s first-born child is a daughter. She inherits the powers from her mother on her sixteenth birthday.”// Melody still remembered how she hadn’t believed her mother. Her mother had made her think of a number and her mother guessed right. Then she had watched her mother disappear, as she turned invisible. Melody had believed her then and thought that it was really cool. Over time her mother began to tell her of other things such as demons and vampires. She also told her that there was another girl in the world who was chosen to fight evil like them. She was a Slayer but she could be anyone. Melody knew that what her mother did could be dangerous but she was excited about getting her chance to help people. She also knew that unlike the Slayer she would one day get the chance to stop without having to die first. Melody found the story of the Slayer very sad and felt bad for whoever was chosen for such a life. Bringing herself back to the present she went downstairs to see what her mother had made for breakfast. She found her at the stove cooking eggs and bacon. “Morning, mom,” she said cheerfully. “Morning, sweetie,” her mother replied. She finished up what she was making and brought it over to the table. As she handed Melody her plate their hands touched for the briefest moment. Melody watched as her mother dropped her plate and it crashed to the floor. “What is it mom?” Melody asked worriedly. “What did you see?” Melody’s mother looked at her daughter sadly. “Melody, I need you to do something for me,” she said. “What mom?” Melody asked, getting scared now. “I need you to go upstairs and pack a suitcase,” she replied. “You have to go to Sunnydale and find the Slayer. I’m going to go to the bank and get you as much money as possible. Be ready to go when I get back.” “But, mom,” Melody said shakily. “What about you? Aren’t you coming?” “I can’t honey,” her mom answered sadly. “I wish I could but I can’t. I’m afraid you’re going to have to be on your own from now on. Don’t worry though. I know you and I know you can do this. You’ll get your powers tomorrow and I know you’ll make me proud.” Melody hugged her mom and started to cry. She knew somehow that she wouldn’t see her mother again. Finally she let go and said quietly, “I’ll go pack.” “Thank you, sweetie,” her mom said and went to the bank. By ten o’clock Melody was on a bus on her way to Sunnydale. She would be there in a couple of hours. She hadn’t been able to bring much with her. She had packed as many of her clothes as she could and her stuffed teddy bear. She figured she could buy anything else she needed when she got there. Melody’s mother had given her all the money she had saved and her lap top computer. Melody could do almost anything with a computer and knew she would need it to get herself enrolled in the high school in Sunnydale. She knew she would also need to get a job to help pay her expenses. She knew the money her mom had given her wouldn’t last forever. She and her mom had had a teary goodbye at the bus station and her mom had given Melody the moon necklace that she always more. Her mom had told her that she had planned to give it to her tomorrow on her birthday. She told Melody that as long as she had that necklace she would always be with her. Melody’s mom had clasped in around Melody’s neck and Melody had gotten on the bus. Melody’s house Melody’s mother looked at the clock again. She knew It would be here any minute. She worried about Melody but knew she would be okay. She was saddened that Melody didn’t at least have her father to turn to now. She hated him for leaving but had never expected him to stick around. He had passed through town briefly. She had fallen for him instantly. He was English and she had always had a thing for accents. She had read his mind and knew he was trouble but she sensed something underneath it all. She sensed a need to be loved. They had had a sweet affair. When she had told him that she was pregnant he had been shocked. He had told her almost sadly that he wasn’t father material. He had then told her that he would be leaving the next day. She had cried when he left but had then pulled herself together. She had a daughter who she would always have as a reminder of their time together. Melody had asked about her father but her mother hadn’t told her much. She knew that Melody would want to find him but she wanted her to be older and have her powers before she went looking for him. She knew that he wasn’t always involved in the best things. She had left a message on the computer though telling Melody everything she knew about him. Just then the door crashed open. “Okay,” It said. “Where is it?” Melody’s mother looked calmly at It and said, “You’ll never find it. It has been safely hidden from you, Hell Beast.” Even as she said it she knew it wasn’t true. She knew It would find the Key but she knew that with Melody already on her way it might be protected better. It was not pleased and It threw a temper tantrum. “You know,” It said. “I really hate it when people call me Hell Beast. How many times do I have to tell you people? It’s Glory.” After that Melody’s mother knew no more, Glory sucked her brain and snapped her neck. She didn’t need another crazy person wandering around. Sunnydale Bus Depot The bus pulled up to the station and Melody got off. She was tired from her trip and missed her mom greatly. She decided to find a room as quickly as possible since it was getting dark. She realized she hadn’t bothered to bring a stake with her. “Good going, Mel,” she muttered to herself. “Go to the Hellmouth and don’t even bring a stake with you. Smart one.” She made her way quickly down the street looking for somewhere to stay. She quickly came across the Sunnydale Motel. She quickly paid for a room and settled in. It had been cheap and fairly clean so she had told the guy behind the desk that she would be staying there indefinitely and had given a month deposit on the room. She unpacked her clothes and sat on the bed hugging her bear. Tomorrow she planned to go out and buy some necessities (including some stakes), then get on the Internet and get herself enrolled at the high school. She wanted to be able to start on Monday. She wasn’t too worried about catching up on the work since she had always been a good student. She lie down and tried to get some sleep. She thought about her mom and held on to her necklace. Her mom had been right. It did make her feel closer to her mother. She fell asleep and dreamt that her mother was there with her.
