Summary: Melody meets Dawn at school and thinks that she is the Slayer.
************************************************************************

“Dawn!” Joyce called up the stairs. “It’s time to get up. Don’t want to be late for your first day of school.”
Dawn rolled over in bed and muttered, “No, wouldn’t want that.” She dragged herself out of bed and tried to figure out what to wear. She actually didn’t mind going to school. She thought school was fun but she was a teenager. She had to at least pretend she didn’t like school.

Melody woke to the blaring of the alarm clock. She rolled over and hit it until it shut up. She sat up and stretched. When she had gone on the internet the other day she had found out that Sunnydale schools hadn’t even started yet. She was relieved that she’d be able to start at the same time as the other students. She had been able to enroll herself and had gotten herself a PO Box since she couldn’t exactly put down the Sunnydale Motel as her home address.
When she had woken up the day after she had gotten to Sunnydale she had felt strange. It took her a minute to realize that she must have inherited her powers. Her mom had been teaching her about concentration and using her powers the closer it got to her birthday. She hoped all the lessons would pay off. She had stood in front of the mirror and really concentrated. She had been amazed as she slowly watched herself disappear. She also found that it was an amazing feeling. She didn’t just turn invisible like you would think. It was like all her molecules just started floating around so it was like she was flying. She wasn’t even solid anymore. When she had gone out that day she had practiced reading people’s minds. The only problem with that was that you had to look them in the eye. It tended to make people nervous to find her staring at them but afterwards they wouldn’t remember it. She still had to working on sorting people’s thoughts so they were easier to understand but she knew with practice she’s soon be able to do it.
She got out of bed and went to see what out of her limited wardrobe would be acceptable for the first day of school.

The Jeep pulled up in front of the school and Dawn got out. “Have a good day, sweetie,” Joyce said.
“I will, mom,” Dawn replied and shut the door. She walked up the steps into the school. She soon found some of her old friends and they went to their first classes. About five minutes into the class the door opened and everyone stared at the girl who walked through. She had auburn hair that flowed down her back almost to her waist and there were blond highlights throughout. She was on the short side Dawn noticed. She looked at her face and noticed that she had really green eyes that almost seemed to be able to look right through you. “Class,” the teacher said. “This is Melody Logan. She just moved to Sunnydale. I hope you’ll all make her feel welcome.” Melody just smiled and took the only free seat, which happened to be next to Dawn. For her part Dawn continued talking to her friends and after that class didn’t give much thought to the new girl until lunchtime.
Dawn walked into the cafeteria with her friends and they quickly grabbed seats at a free table. Dawn happened to glance over at the next table and noticed the new girl sitting by herself and reading a book. I remember what it was like when we first moved to Sunnydale, Dawn thought to herself. “Hey, guys,” she spoke up. “Why don’t we ask the new girl to sit with us?” The others nodded and Dawn walked over to the next table.
“Hi, Melody, right?” Dawn said.
“Hi,” Melody replied. “You’re in my English class aren’t you?”
“Yeah, I’m Dawn. You want to come eat lunch with us?” she replied gesturing to where her friends were sitting.
“Thanks,” Melody answered. She got up and followed Dawn over to the table. She was happy to be included with these girls.
“So,” Dawn said. “Why’d you move to Sunnydale?” Why would anyone move to the Hellmouth, she thought. Melody almost fell off of her seat. She couldn’t believe what she had just heard Dawn thinking. She must be the Slayer, Melody thought to herself. This is my lucky day. I’ll have to be careful though until I know for sure.
“Well my mom lost her job and we couldn’t afford to stay where we were living. She was able to find a job in Sunnydale and an affordable place to live,” Melody replied. She figured it would give her a good excuse as to why she had no money.
“What about your dad?” one of the other girls asked. Dawn glared at the other girl. How could she be so insensitive? Obviously if her father was around she would have mentioned him. Dawn knew only too well what it was like to have an absent father.
“My dad left before I was born,” Melody replied. It didn’t bother her to talk about her father. Her mom had never liked to talk about him only to say that he was a good man deep down but he was into some bad things. Melody had found all the information about her father on the computer. She had read the all about he bad things her father had done but she had also read about the love he felt for her mother. Her mother left it up to her whether she wanted to look for him or not. Melody hadn’t decided yet. She thought it would be nice to get the chance to meet him and maybe even convince him to stick around. It was lonely being by herself. She noticed Dawn giving her a sympathetic glance before she heard her think, My dad left me too. I was older but it hurt just the same. It was like all of a sudden he realized he didn’t want me anymore.
From there the girls all talked about what they did that summer. Melody and Dawn compared schedules and realized they also had math and science together after lunch.

After school Melody said good-bye to Dawn and went back to the Motel. She was glad to have made a friend, especially since it looked like she was the Slayer. She had caught another of Dawn’s thoughts later that day and it had been about vampires. She just wasn’t sure what to do. All her mom had said was to go to Sunnydale and find the Slayer. She didn’t tell Melody what she was supposed to do after that. She also knew that until she was sure she had to keep her identity a secret.

Dawn sat at a table in the Magic Box writing in her journal. As first days of school go. Today wasn’t bad. I made a new friend. Her name is Melody and she’s really cool. She just moved her. Maybe that’s why I feel so close to her. I know what it’s like to be the new kid. Dawn paused for a moment remembering the other night when she and Buffy had come home from Harmony’s lair. Buffy probably would’ve gotten in way more trouble than me anyway. But I guess it was pretty okay of her not to say anything to mom. Anya’s going to be okay and Xander wasn’t mad at me. So stuff mostly worked out. Dawn’s thoughts were interrupted when Buffy said, “Don’t break anything.” Dawn glared at her retreating form. She was back two seconds later though and said, “Just don’t touch anything.” Not that Buffy’s really changed at all. Like she ever would. “What you’re doing right now, not moving? Good keep doing that,” she heard her sister’s voice say. She still thinks I’m Little Miss Nobody, just her dumb little sister. Boy, is she in for a surprise.
