WASHINGTON - Fresh off a spat with rival Hillary Clinton, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama (news, bio, voting record) says he'd like to see an end to the "tit-for-tat" that dominates politics.

The Obama and Clinton campaigns fired off dueling press releases this week over a top Hollywood donor who was a supporter of Bill Clinton but is backing Obama in this race.

The Clinton campaign demanded that Obama return DreamWorks studio co-founder David Geffen's money after Geffen criticized the Clintons as dishonest, among other things. Obama declined, and his spokesman criticized Clinton in return for accepting the support of a South Carolina lawmaker who said Obama can't win because he's black.

Obama told donors at a Houston fundraiser Thursday night that the nation will remain at a standstill "if we continue to engage in small and divisive politics and tit-for-tat."

"Our country is at a crossroads right now," he said, citing problems in Iraq and domestically with education, energy and health care. "It's not as if we don't know what the solutions are. What's missing is the inability of our leadership to develop consensus."

Obama was speaking to about 300 people gathered at the Communication Workers of America union hall. Although the event was advertised as requiring a minimum $100 contribution, lower amounts were accepted at the door.

The campaign would not say how much Obama raised at the event. He also visited St. Louis earlier in the day to raise money.

Obama was scheduled to speak Friday at a massive outdoor rally in Austin, Texas. More than 10,000 people have signed up for free tickets on Obama's Web site, the campaign said.

NEW YORK - For much of the country, it's Girl Scout cookie time again. And this year, all those cookies, not just the Thin Mints and a few others, will come nearly free of harmful trans fats.

The Girl Scouts have marked their 90th year in the cookie business by getting most of the artificial fat out of all varieties of their iconic treats, which had been under attack by a few health-focused consumer groups.

Buffalo police warn men about 200-pound 'hugging bandit'
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) � She's a 200-pound-plus hugging machine, but her affection comes with a price. Police are warning men about the "Hugging Bandit," who heartily embraces men coming out of downtown bars and leaves them wallet-less. Dozens of men say they have been victims. Police say others are too embarrassed to admit it.

"She doesn't just go up to you and hug you," said Detective Sgt. Tom Donovan. "She actually grabs (them), tries to talk them into something more, and there goes their wallet."

The Hugging Bandit has been striking for about the past decade, typically between 2 and 4 a.m. She uses the credit cards she steals within hours of her theft, police said.

"As far as I can tell, she waits until it's late at night and these guys coming out of the bars are tipsy," Donovan said. "They're either going to their car or going to the hot dog vendor ... She makes sure they're rip-roaring drunk."

Officers believe she is a 48-year-old Buffalo woman they have arrested 17 times between 1998 and 2005 for similar schemes, as well as prostitution and criminal possession of stolen property.

Her most recent theft was early Sunday. A man told police a heavyset woman approached him for sex. When he said no, she gave him a hug and left �" with his wallet containing $25, his driver's license and debit cards.

On Wednesday, police showed the man a photo array that included the woman suspected in the case. The man admitted that he was too drunk to remember her.

NEW YORK - Beavers grace New York City's official seal. But the industrious rodents have not been seen in the flesh here for as many as 200 years � until this week.

Biologists videotaped a beaver swimming up the Bronx River on Wednesday. Its twig-and-mud lodge had been spotted earlier on the river bank, but the tape confirmed the presence of the animal itself.

It had to happen because beaver populations are expanding, and their habitats are shrinking," said Dietland Muller-Schwarze, a beaver expert at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse. "We're probably going to see more of them in the future."

Beavers gnawed out a prominent place in the city's early days as a European settlement, attracting fur traders to a nascent Manhattan. The animal appears in the city seal to symbolize a Dutch trading company that factored in the city's colonial beginnings, according to the city's Web site.

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica - An American senior citizen killed an alleged mugger with his bare hands, and his traveling companions aboard a tour bus fended off two other assailants in the Atlantic coast city of Limon, police said.

The American, who is about 70 years old and retired from the military, put the 20-year-old in a head lock and broke his clavicle after the suspect and two other men armed with a knife and gun held up their tour bus, said Luis Hernandez, the police chief of Limon, 80 miles east of San Jose. The suspect, Warner Segura, was later declared dead, apparently from asphyxiation.

The two other men fled when the 12 senior citizens started defending themselves during the Wednesday attack. Afterward, the tourists drove Segura to the Red Cross where he was declared dead. The Red Cross also treated one of the tourists for an anxiety attack, Hernandez said Thursday.

The tourists left on their Carnival cruise ship after the incident and Hernandez said authorities do not plan to press charges against them.

"They were in their right to defend themselves after being held up," he said.

Hernandez said Segura had previous charges against him for assaults.

In a media statement, Miami, Fla.-based Carnival Cruise Lines said the attack occurred during an outing at a Limon beach which a group of a dozen passengers had arranged on their own.

"According to witnesses, while sightseeing at a local beach, the group of guests were approached by three assailants, one of whom was armed," the statement said.

"The victims struggled with the armed perpetrator, and were able to disarm him. During this process, the gunman's two accomplices fled the scene. In the course of disarming and restraining the assailant, he died from apparent asphyxiation."

Neither the Costa Rican police nor Carnival identified the man involved in the struggle with the mugger.

The cruise line said the guests were questioned by local law enforcement and then returned to the ship. The ship's departure from Limon was slightly delayed.

"All of the guests involved, who had booked the cruise together as a group, have opted to continue with their vacation plans. Carnival is providing full support and assistance to the guests," according to the statement.

The ship, The Carnival Liberty, continued on its scheduled itinerary, with a port call scheduled in Colon, Panama.

NEW YORK - News video showing about a dozen rats running around a KFC-Taco Bell restaurant in Greenwich Village was widely disseminated Friday on TV stations and the Internet.

The footage, taken from the sidewalk through a window, showed the rats running around the floor, between counters and tables and on children's high chairs. The establishment was not open at the time.

New Calif. Bill Could Make Smoking In Cars Illegal

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Californians cannot smoke in restaurants, government buildings or near playgrounds. Now a California lawmaker wants to move the ban to automobiles, according NBC4 San Francisco.
"I grew up with cigarette smoke all around me," said Amy Yale, who is now a nonsmoker.
She supports the proposed law making it illegal for adults to smoke in cars carrying children.
"First of all, I think it's a danger to be smoking while you're driving, and of course, with children in an enclosed space. I think all the inhaling of the smoke is pretty bad for their health," Yale said.
Her 13-year-old daughter Savahna can't stand riding in cars with smokers.
"Disgusting and smells bad," Savahna Yale said.
If the bill, proposed by state Senator Jenny Oropeza, passes and a driver is caught smoking with kids in the car, they face a $100 fine.
According to Oropeza's Web site, Senate Bill 7 would apply to any car with a child younger than the age of 18 in it, even if the car was parked and on private property.
The measure includes putting notice of the ban in the California Driver's Handbook.
Critics argue the government is going too far and squashing smokers' freedom to light up where they want.
Margo Leathers Sidener of BREATHE California said it's important to protect kids.
"Secondhand smoke is a toxic hazard and it was declared so recently by the California Air Resources Board. We also know that there is no safe level of secondhand smoke and that the vulnerable population are minors," she said.
A Senate committee will review the proposed law in March.
