The dog days of Summer may not be all that exciting, but there's something about Spring Training. Every team is equal and has a shot. This year, I pick the Cubbies to shock the world by having all of that new talent and doing nothing with it. The Dodgers will win the West on the last day of the season only to get swept in the first round (again). Barry Bonds will get his record, but the word "asterisk" becomes synonomous with his name. The most hallowed record in all of sports will become a farce. Only the city of San Francisco will recognize it as legit.

none of MY teachers ever molestered me.
not fair

CLINTON, South Carolina (AP) -- A middle school teacher accused of having sex with at least five boys -- some of them students at her school -- was arrested, authorities said.

Police began investigating Allenna Williams Ward, 23, after school officials recovered a note containing inappropriate messages, said Clinton Public Safety Director John Thomas.

Ward, who is married, had sexual encounters with the 14- and 15-year-old boys at various locations, including in the school, at a motel, in a park and behind a restaurant, from December to this month, according to arrest warrants.

Some of the victims were students at Ward's school, Thomas said.

Ward was placed on administrative leave with pay last Thursday, acting district Superintendent Laura Koskela said. A message left for the school's principal was not immediately returned Wednesday.

Ward was charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor and six counts of lewd acts on a minor, according to arrest warrants. She is being held in jail awaiting a bail hearing, police said.

A phone message left at Ward's home was not returned.

Dodgers Pitcher Could Be a Billionaire

VERO BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Matt White, a journeyman pitcher trying to make the Los Angeles Dodgers, could become baseball's first billionaire player.

It has nothing to do with his arm. He owns a rock quarry in western Massachusetts.

White, who has appeared in seven big league games in nine professional seasons, paid $50,000 three years ago to buy 50 acres of land from an elderly aunt who needed the money to pay for a nursing home.

While clearing out a couple acres to build a home, he discovered stone ledges in the ground, prompting him to have the property surveyed.

A geologist estimated there were 24 million tons of the stone on his land. The stone is being sold for upward of $100 per ton, meaning there's well over $2 billion worth of material used for sidewalks, patios and the like.

Of course, that doesn't factor in the expenses involved in processing the stone and transporting it for sale.

"It sounds bogus even saying those numbers," White said. "I'm just a small town guy trying to get to the big leagues. It's beyond comprehension."

The news has prompted some of White's teammates to refer to him as "The Billionaire," but the 29-year-old left-hander isn't counting his money just yet.

"There are a lot of questions," he said. "It takes time, it takes money, it takes machines. There are professionals who handle that stuff."

ya think?

BOSTON (AP) -- Boston Celtics radio analyst Cedric Maxwell apologized on the air Wednesday night for saying that a female referee should "go back to the kitchen" after he disagreed with one of her calls.

Maxwell made the comment during the Celtics' 77-72 victory over the Houston Rockets on Monday. He subsequently said "Go in there and make me some bacon and eggs, would you?" in reference to referee Violet Palmer.

"If I said anything that might have been insensitive or sexist in any way, then I apologize because she worked extremely hard to get where she is now, end of quote," Maxwell said before the Celtics' game against the New York Knicks on WEEI-AM, which is owned by Entercom Communications.

"This really has been a fire storm," he added later.

Minneapolis Star-Tribune:

Former NBA great Dennis Johnson dropped dead of a heart attack at age 52 while coaching the minor league Austin Toros. Barry Stevens, 43, who ranks just ahead of Fred Hoiberg on Iowa State's all-time scoring list, died last week while exercising in Gary, Ind. Denver Broncos running back Damien Nash, 24, collapsed and died Saturday after a charity basketball game in St. Louis. There is a reason the Timberwolves travel with an automated external defibrillator. They pack it on the road, keep it in the passenger cabin on their charter flights and have it courtside at all games, home and away, and all practices. "Of everything you can try to do in those situations [cardiac arrest], that's the one that works best," Wolves physical therapist Andre Deloya said.
