Why? they knew the deal when they got into it - don't see why the JA should give them anything. Presumably you are suggesting that the gambling industry and the brewing industry should subsidise their recovering addicts as well?

People joined the JA for a variety of reasons, some because they felt that was what their God wanted, some wanted a crutch, others just couldn't cope with real life anymore! Whatever you say about the JA, they never pinned anybody down and forced them to join - all these folk went into the thing with their eyes open only with varied motivations.

What is it about society that is obsessed with people being set free from the consequenses of their actions????

Perhaps the only exception to this rule is for community kids who I do feel some degree of sympathy for. Unfortunately, again, it is not the JA who should be asking for forgiveness. These kids were wronged by their parents and it is the parents who are to blame. I lived in community for 2 decades and my kids did suffer because of it. The thing is, that if I've screwed my kids lives up by making any choice in my life; I answer for it. My Dad raped me. It was not societys' fault. It was not any Churchs' fault. It was not the Medias' fault. It was down to him.

If you think that there is a place for the JA in society then I can't see how turning them into another mainstream socially acceptable community church would possibly help anyone. There are thousands of those. What do you think This purpose would be?
