"But P Yogananda changed the Kriya yoga of Lahiri Mahasaya so much that it is almost unrecognisable as being from Lahiri lineage."

More urban legend with hyperbole added. Sure, he made some modifications in the manner of streamlining the practice, but I have never read that he added anything to the first kriya. I have also read numerous postings from various individuals stating that the first kriya as taught by SRF is practiced similarly by some 'traditional' lines in India.

In any event, it is pretty well accepted that Lahiri did not teach all his students uniformily, resulting in differences even among "traditional" lines in India.

"Yogananda insists that the Kriya Yoga taught at SRF is the Kriya of Lahiri,..."

Yes he did, from his very earliest days in the USA as attested by various articles (i.e. Ladder of Realization, etc). Since the public did not know who Lahiri was, he could easily have called it his own - he didn't need to make the Lahiri association in order to spread his teachings.

"...but most Kriya Yogis from the the Lahiri tradition don't seem to think so."

So why didn't his own Master, a loyal disciple of Lahiri, admonish him for this alleged mis-representation when Yogandandaji returned to India in 1935, instead of bestowing on him the title of 'Parmahansa?'

"So I think its a bit rich to criticise Davis Walters et al when your own guru is perceived by many to have injected a lot of his own drastic innovations."

Sure, some (like Satyeswaranda, who claims to have spent more years with Babaji then did Lahiri) consider offering higher kriyas without emphasis on kechari mudra a drastic innovation.
