Being as how I grew up on a cattle ranch, I thought I'd take a swing at a few of your comments. And yes, cows are dumb! Walking hamburgers, the lot of 'em.

“It’s dirty and sharp.” - Look around the store. Everything is tidy and clean. Why is the post-holer dirty?

I saw this as the classic parental distraction of a toddler; ie, 'it's dirty, don't touch'. Thinking back on the ep, it didn't look dirty. At least I don't remember gobs of dirt hanging off of it.

Mal stepping lightly through the meadow muffins, “This is the last time, the last time with cows.” This begs all kinds of questions about artistic license here. Mal said earlier that the cattle have been on the ship for three weeks. The cargo hold was full of cattle. Where was the feed? The deck is amazingly clean considering. How did they clean it up on the trip? Where did the liquid go? Do these people have any idea what a feed lot smells like? I seriously hope Serenity has a very effective cleaning and airing system!

Where was the feed? - either they had just enough for the journey, or the cows ate the same processed protein as the rest of the crew. There's a chicken company in Canada running ads that basically say 'our chicken is best because we don't feed them animal proteins', so it's not that much of a suspension of disbelief.

How did they clean it up? - I would think the easiest way would be to shovel any solid wastes into a space that could be opened to space. Any leftovers would probably have the liquid gone and be easily swept out.

Where did the liquid go? - Isn't there something that looks like a drain in the cargo floor? Hose it out, either with water or compressed air. Easy.

Feed lot smells - yeah, I take your point on that. However, if you keep up with the shoveling, it wouldn't be that bad. And those cows looked awfully clean! (take it from me, somebody was washing them)

“Milk and hay three times a day, fed to ‘em by beautiful women.” - Again serious problems with the writer knowing nothing about the subject. What kind of twit would water grown cattle with milk? Feeding them three times a day? Has Greenberg ever even seen a live cow?

Well, I figured this as a sales gimmick. And you feed cows twice a day, so I didn't think anything about the 'three' business. Plus, can you really see Inara feeding cows? ;)

Hope this all made sense.
