I was glad Mal allowed Jayne to live, and not just because I find Jayne amusing. Killing Jayne, especially in that way, would have made Mal too hard for me to identify with. No matter how much of an ass Jayne can be, he and Mal have formed a partnership, even a friendship. Jayne's even loyal to Mal--he didn't see his actions as betraying Mal until Mal spelled it out for him. What Jayne did was very serious. It could have gotten Simon killed, River locked back up in that torture center, and risked Serenity as well. Mal delivers the message as loud and clear as he has to, and I think he really considers just dumping Jayne. Ultimately, though, the same sense of loyalty Mal has toward the Tams gives Jayne another chance--one he'd better not mess up. "Grit" is a good thing, but it can easily be taken too far.
