>>> I was honestly afraid they were going to kill off Jayne ...

I was hoping that Mal would allow Jayne to die, even though Jayne is one of the most interesting characters. His death would have added considerably more grit to Mal and the show in general. Even though this was a stellar episode, I was slightly disappointed to see Mal allow Jayne to live.

Regardless, I think we will see a little character growth on the part of Jayne. He has got to know that he screwed the pooch in all directions. He must know that if the "two-by-two, hands-of-blue" crew (hereafter the TbTHoB crew) had caught up with him, he too would have been gruesomely executed. Plus, he must know that River is on to him. He doesn't have many friends left. I suspect that excessive contrition is in order.

This raises a question. Why did the TbTHoB crew kill the federal officers before securing their prisoners? My answer is that the secret of what River has become is vastly more important than River herself. What has River become? It appears that she can both read minds and see (or reliably predict) future events. Such capabilities would indeed be exceedingly useful for espionage, though much less so if these capabilities became known. Third question, who would the Alliance need to use such espionage against? Is there an enemy not yet revealed to us? And, I don't mean the reavers. We'll have to wait and see.

By the way -- the next episode entitled War Stories doesn't show till December 6th, according to http://www.fox.com/firefly/episodes.htm.
