] Date Posted: 12:17:15 11/26/04 Fri In reply to: Jim (Canada) 's message, "I have added a unique British Empire flag to the Commonwealth History page" on 03:19:51 11/26/04 Fri I saw sucj a flag on the net a while back and have always thought that such a flag would be excellent to represent CANZUK. I recomend, the Union Flag top left, some symbol for Canada top right, some symbol for OZ bottom left, some symbol for NZ bottom right. The order is that of the of Dominion status being arrived at. Good symbols would be: Canada: Maple-leaf Australia & NZ their own constellations. How does this sound? [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |

Date Posted: 14:06:22 11/26/04 Fri I own this flag and it hangs proudly on my wall. But I think that the coats of arms for Canada and Australia are better than the Maple Leaf or constellations symbols. If we were to use this flag as a basis for an FC flag, I would keep the Canadian, New Zealand and Australian bits as they are, and use the empty space from which the Union of South Africa symbol will have to be removed (*sob*) to put in something representing the West Indies realms. There is royal heraldry for these places too. Oh, and the Star of India would have to go, too. Ought it be replaced, or left blank in the middle? And if replaced, with what? Perhaps the initial 'EII' (or, after Charles becomes King, 'GVII'), as currently exists in the centre of the royal standards for NZ and Australia and, for all I know, Canada... Thoughts? Date Posted: 16:00:08 11/26/04 Fri Australia and New Zealand's southern crosses are virtually identical, there being only two small differences: their stars are red and ours are white, and we have a little fifth star along with ours. (Our federation star doesn't really count as part of the constellation, because it has no intention of representing an actual star.) With a bit of luck, we antipodeans will tidy up the unfinished business of our Federation before the FC gets off the ground, and will already be the Commonwealth of Australia and New Zealand when the time comes to make a CANZUK flag. Maybe then we will take the average of our constellations and have four and a half pale pink stars... [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 16:07:33 11/26/04 Fri It has always been my belief that Oz/NZ unification would be the most desirable first step to achieve our aims. The bottom-up approach to unification always works better than the top-down approach. Just think of the UK, US versus the EU. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 17:38:08 11/26/04 Fri The thing is, that I rather like the white stars offsetting the red cross. I don't know why. I'm peering at my flag now and there's something about it which appeals to me. Mind you, if one were to remove the Star of India, the struture would fall and perhaps they would look out of place. Perhaps I should fiddle round with it on MS Paint or something. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 17:54:34 11/26/04 Fri First of all, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica and Barbados all have their royal standards with a blue roundel in the centre containing an 'E' for Elizabeth surrounded by a garland of white roses. These flags are all based on the respective coats of arms. I have them all displayed on the Commonwealth History page, near the bottom under Royal Flags. Take a look. I have drawn an updated version of this Empire flag as an FC flag. I kept the white ensign design with the red cross and the Union Flag and I put the red maple leaf of Canada in the top right, the Australian Commonwealth star in blue (as on the RAN ensign) in the bottom left and the stars of NZ all in red (as on the RNZN ensign) in the bottom right. It looks good, but the whole thing looks too much like a naval ensign rather than a national flag. I would prefer something using red, white and blue with a red cross on a dark blue background with a white North Star in the top left and a white Southern Cross constellation in the bottom right, keeping it simple.
