Subject: Playing my new clubs

I have been playing 1iron clubs (3-lw and 3wood, driver) for about 4months. It has taken a while to get used to them. I was concerned that being 76 yrs old and playing graphite shafts for several years now that I would have trouble with the weight. With patience and reading the comments form David, I now feel quite comfortable with the clubs and find that I am more consistent and worry less about a multitude of details involving swinging different length clubs. This has freed me up to work on a more grooved swing, a swing that I can trust more and a swing that I can put much more channeled power into. The driver has become an absolute jewel. It is straight and getting longer all the time. The long irons are perhaps a little off in distance, but distance left to the hole is less because it is usually in the fairway. I have adjusted to the weight and find (like David says) that my body reacts much better to the weight distribution. It feels more like a natural swing. The interesting thing is that I have not told my playing partners that I have new clubs (except the driver) and not one has noticed except that I am playing better. I plan to inform them soon. Great clubs, they do what David says they will and they make my game much more pleasant and less complicated. At 76, that less complicated thing is very important.

John: Just a thought about your loss of distance with the long (lower-lofted) irons. One of my students was having a similiar problem and after working with him for a few minutes, I realized he was simply not "finishing" the swing. To realize the maximum distance potential of all "full swing shots" with the 1-Irons, we must be accelerating thru the ball at impact, and the only way to do that consistently is to make a complete follow-thru, with your weight transferred to the front foot, your chest facing the target and the club completing it's swing path over your forward shoulder. I see a lot of golfers that just sort of "stop" their swing after ball impact, and wonder why their carry distance suffers. Simple problem, simple fix. Just remember, finish the swing! Good luck to you and keep hitting 'em straight! R2
