The combined SF is not only a waste of time, it also defeats the purpose of the event. The purpose of the combined final is to see how the best current students fare against the best ex-students. If you have a SF and the standard is different you get the sitation we had this year in the latin:

- only one ex-student couple made the final, had Scott & Sarah not pulled out none of them would have
- the final was simply a re-run of the advanced final, absolutely no value, no-one cared.

Take the top 3 from each event and let them compete against each other. That was what we planned to do last year anyway, but there were lots of complaints and a tiny bit of slack appeared on the day due to Hopkins amazingly efficient compering, so they were re-inserted.

I agree that reducing numbers in heats is a great idea, but it will cost rather than save time. Had we gone down to open circuit heat sizes of ~12, IVDA would have still been running at 6 am...

ps RnR takes very little time, ~10 minutes last year, due to the small number of entries. I don't particular care for it, but it's not a problem in terms of time... (so long as they are prepared to get changed very very quickly...)
