What economies of scale? I can only see twice as many expenses but not twice as many entries. Unless you get a special deal on the hall, I suspect most costs would just be double.

I think the idea in principle is good, but not everyone can afford the time & money involved. If the events were split, how many people would bother going to watch offbeat & r'n'r leaving a rather subdued atmosphere for these competitors. I would be happy to be proved wrong though :)
