I think that goes back to the "what is our function" question. Many people think we are here for ballroom and Latin, and that offbeat and Rock and roll (And salsa which alot of people want to dance is not even there) are add ons. Depends on your perspective. Thats a huge can of worms.
I prefer having the best offbeats but alot of people though the difference in judges opinions was too great, and that there are supposedly not enough chances to perform offbeat. This way I suppose we give everyone the same chance. It may encourage a better standard, rather than people struggling to fill out routines...
Personally: the only way we keep everyone happy is for IVDA to be over 2 days, but this is not going to happen, so decisions have to be made.
I want to promote all kinds of dancing, but at the end of the day I think ballroom and Latin dancing takes priority as this is the only way we can do it. There are lots of salsa clubs for salsa dances. Irish, tap, scottish dancing etc has it's own comps, and show dancers like ballet can put on shows.
Entirely my opinion here but: Offbeat was supposed to give everyone a chance to show what they can do besides ballroom, and be fun. It is not fun if people have to sit through hours of it. If it has become the primary function of a group of people. they should look into other ways of doing it, rather than trying to take over an existing comp, the enthusiasts should set up their own, or create a subsection of IVDA to do so. Because IVDC will never be long enough in its current format. Especially now ali's thing adds time.
>The rationale behind this was
>>that time needed to be found to ease the timetabling
>>problems at IVDC, which had become severe (there were
>>up to 26 couples on the floor at once in some events
>>(beginners only, I hasten to add)).
>
>Very well, then my next question is, if the
>timetabling problems are occuring with the ballroom
>events, why cut the Offbeat section? Why not, for
>example, the Advanced/Ex combined competition, which
>invloves far fewer dancers?
