Jung, as always, we all appreciate your thoughts, and the time it takes to run this site. A few comments on your recent article, 'Mel Gibson's Passion: Part I':

I have not had a chance to see this film, as of yet, but have been looking forward to its release. I will admit, however, that although I am a Christian (and almost as important, a cinephile), there is another Mel Gibson movie that I would rather be discussing, Mad Max IV: Fury Road. Unfortunately, this film seems to have been shelved, and I can only PRAY that Gibson 'sees the light'.

Anyway, my comments:

You state - 'For many people, especially many true, devout Christians, myself included, “The Passion of the Christ” will be the first experience they have that allows them to truly identify with the suffering Lord.' I hope this is not true.

I know it isn't true for me, as I believe I have been able to identify with the Lord through Scripture, Prayer, and most importantly, Life. I hope that when I see this film it augments and enriches my spritual life, but if I never see the film, I think I can still identify with my Lord.

You state, rather boldly: '“The Passion of the Christ” is the most important film in the history of cinema.' I have not seen the film, but with reasonable confidence I can say that this is almost certainly incorrect. If someone wishes to start another thread about important films, I would be happy to expound upon this point.

Perhaps, one could make the argument that this is the most important spiritual, or Christian, film ever made. I don't think anyone can know, yet, even that much. "The Ten Commandments" must surely be near the top of the list?

You continue by saying, 'I stated that this is the most important film ever made, and indeed it is. Christians believe that the Books of the New Testament were written by human authors but divinely inspired. As “The Passion” simply reframes the Gospel story, no less important today than 2000 years ago, in a new medium for a new generation of mankind. A simple progression from storytelling, to the printed word, and now to film. I think it’s a reasonable conclusion to say that “The Passion of the Christ” is the capturing of the Gospels’ central event in a way that’s every bit as divinely inspired.' I cannot express how disturbing I find this statement. Jung, could you please clarify, expand, rephrase, or otherwise, restate what you are attempting to communicate here (perhaps in Part II of the article?). I will not comment further until you respond.

As always, keep up the good work. Your articles are never boring, and that is the highest compliment I would ever give to a writer.

Augie
