Thank YOU for the challening and extremely well-articulated rebut. A guest column spot is yours anytime :)

Part II is by Lou, and as I can't gaurantee what that loose cannon will write, I'll just address a couple of your points here.

First,
'For many people, especially many true, devout Christians, myself included, “The Passion of the Christ” will be the first experience they have that allows them to truly identify with the suffering Lord.' I hope this is not true.

Well, for many, espcially those not so far along in the development of their faith, I think this will be true. And if a movie on the subject is what it takes to inspire further experiences with prayer, study of scripture and practice of faith in every day life, then good!

For me personally, I also feel as though I know the Lord in a personal way, with or without any film. But the tortured realism exhibited here brought the Passion event home for me in a way I hadn't previously experienced. And likewise, anything that helps me get closer to God, I'll take it.

“The Passion of the Christ” is the capturing of the Gospels’ central event in a way that’s every bit as divinely inspired.' I cannot express how disturbing I find this statement. Jung, could you please clarify, expand, rephrase, or otherwise, restate what you are attempting to communicate here

I didn't intend this to be disturbing. At the risk of getting theological, my assertion is simply this - I believe that the Holy Spirit worked in the writers of the Gospels and other books in the bible to help them create their works. Are these works perfect? Not in a clinical sense - they're full of contradictions and innacuricies, what you would expect from human authors. Yet none of this detracts from their spiritual importance - their message was given to Mankind by God through humans. I think you can extrapolate this to other media - for example, the Pieta or Jesus, Joy of Mans's Desiring - created by Men, but one could argue that their inspiration was from the Spirit. Obviously no one can prove that one way or the other (one of the cool parts about Faith). But I would say that if you believe in divine inspiration, that people are the hands of God, then it's not unreasonable to think that Mel Gibson making a brilliant film about the Passion of Jesus (especially at a time and place of very deep division and social conflict on the subject of Religion), was another example of the Spirit at work. He works in mysterious ways, after all.

Finally, as for the merits of "The Passion" as a film - well, that's debatable I'm sure. I will say, though, that I've never, ever been to a movie in which nearly everyone was openly, audibly weeping throughout. If nothing else, it was on target in evoking the auidences Pathos.
