“Guess, I should make a phone call…” Shane didn’t see any other way. News of the shootout was bound to reach the media soon.

Val watched with interest as Shane took his cell phone over to a private corner of the hallway and conducted an extremely brief conversation.

She didn’t say a word, but Shane could tell the curiosity was killing her. “My Dad…” he mumbled awkwardly. “Wanted to tell him myself…”

Val nodded with understanding. “How’d he take it?” she asked.

“I couldn’t reach him. He’s gone fishing. Josh said he’d tell Sam the minute he sees him,” Shane told her.

“You could call him yourself?” Val decided to go out on a limb and suggest a further reconciliation between father and son.

“S’pose so,” Shane answered curtly, appreciating her efforts but unwilling to focus on his personal problems while on-duty.

“Shane…” Val’s face was filled with love.

“C’mon, we should get back to Nick…” he shrugged, effectively ending the discussion for now.

They looked around and noticed Nick hovering by the vending machine with little enthusiasm. Val looked at Shane. "Is there no chance that Josh can get here to fetch you?"

Shane looked absently at her. "I dunno - he sounded sleepy, and the ranch is far away." He furrowed his brow, wondering what Josh was doing at the ranch if not for one of Sam's famed barbecues, since Sam was out fishing. But probably Josh had told Shane already of his plans and he had just forgotten. "It's a weird night, this one, Val. I don't want him on the roads too. I made clear to him that I'm all right." He cleared his throat. "Actually, I'm afraid I convinced him that right now I'm safe and sound in my bed."

"Which is exactly where you should be," Valerie added with a tiny frown. The CAT scan had revealed no concussion, luckily, but he looked like it was pure strength of will that was keeping him on his feet.

Shane shook his head, carefully. “No. Nick needs all the support we can give him. And soon Rob will know about Randy too, and he’ll surely come over here. And this’ll open a whole other can of worms. Why was Randy driving his car, and why did it...” He sighed heavily. “I’ll rest as soon as possible, Val, I swear.”

“All right,” she said gently. She moved her hand to his back and was glad of his arm coming up to encircle her shoulders. “Let’s stay here a little longer... but if you just slept a little on these nice chairs...”

He laughed under his breath, nervously, and tightened his hold on her, then they walked towards Nick.
