Not for unfamiliarity with the territory, oh no, not that at all, nor were his plans any different from any other evening. But the difference was that, though he enjoyed the freedom of solitary stalking, he did not particularly wish to be alone on this sultry summer evening and he slowed his stride to stop and glance back in the direction of his lair, unmindful of what any witnesses might think of the obvious sudden shift of direction and interest. And just as swiftly as he had set out, with the characteristic flighty flip-flops of attention, he retraced his tracks with a light and easy stride, taking the stairs with a youthful energy and a devil's grace. And with all the grand fanfare of a prince passing through the gates of his city, one light-hearted vampire burst back into his apartment, lively emeralds seeking out his fledgling and companion as he slipped through their home on her trail.
