In the 1930s appeasement had to be the way to go. The first world war had been a long and bitter conflict and you cannot blame Chamberlain for trying to prevent another war on that scale. Even if Chamberlain had wanted to stop Hitler in the 1930s he couldn't have. People forget that Britain is ruled by democracy and without the support of the people you cannot do anything. Well Chamberlain did not have the support of the British public when it came to fighting Hitler. I believe that at the time appeasement was the only hope Chamberlain had of stopping war. Next time, think before you critisise Chamberlain, if you were a member of the British public in 1938 I bet you would be cheering when he waved the piece of paper that promised 'peace in our time'.
