When I had my braces taken off in 1993, I had to wait for two days for my impressions. For the two days between taking off the braces and the impressions, my orthodontist instucted me to check lots of bubble gum (which was forbidden with the braces!) I asked him if he was serious, and HE WAS! He said it gave the jaw a good workout and positioned or settled-in the teeth. Then a few days after the impressions, I got full-time Hawley Retainer which I wore fulltime for a year. After that year, I only wear them at night (10 years now). I am now 56 and will continue to wear them at night for the duration... Thankfully, my teeth have remained faithfully IN PLACE!
For me, the whole ortho experience was certainly worth the mild discomforts I had at times.
