Rita's story misses controllable facts so there is nothing to refute.

The part I am reading now is about the Russians, how they reacted on Fischer, and how they tried to come up with an organized plan to beat Fischer. It’s interesting to read how uninformed the Russians were about the western world. They had no idea why Fischer stopped playing for a while. Even to get a list of the games Fischer played was difficult for them to get. To understand this you have to understand the Soviet society. Everything was secretive and everybody was very suspicious. To get a subscription on a western chess magazines was already very difficult. The authors come up with another example: When Chrutsjev went to the United States, he got an invitation to visit Camp David. He asked the Russian foreign affairs about Camp David but they could not help him. Only later he found out that the invitation was an honor and not a camp for foreigners. In his memoirs he writes how ashamed he felt about his ignorance.

It’s also interesting to read how uncontrollable Spasski was for the Soviet leaders. You know why Spasski did not want to play the 1972 match in Russia? He was afraid that other Russian players would help Fischer!

There is no indication of an organized press campaign against Fischer. One “dirty” article is mentioned. But Botwinnik (I have to look that up) is against the articles and from then on such articles are not published anymore. The western press published much more critical articles about Fischer and not entirely unjustified. Fischer has very serious character flaws.
