SJ: My Weird Dream (1)

Usually my dreams are more entertaining than anything. They are often funny, always colorful and usually forgotten within the first hour after I wake up. Some dreams, however, are intense and disturbing. One morning last October (10/01/2002), I had such a disturbing dream, which I have talked to very few people about.

In certain Christian circle, the ability to see visions and visionary dreams has almost become a bragging right. I don’t think of this dream of mine as “visionary”. I mean, God is not a miser when it comes to revealing Himself -- He is always doing so around us, if only we are willing to see Him. On the other hand, I don’t think there is any spectacularly “what makes Eugene a prophet” revelation in my dream. If anything, my sub-consciousness seemed to have solidified my feeling about church for me.

It’s a rather long dream, and I already tend to be long-winded. So I am just going to write about the first half of it now. Here’s what I dreamed about:

I was in a church with many people. The inside of the church looked like a theater for live stage shows. As we were all sitting in our seats waiting for some kind of a show to start, I had a vision: The curtains went up to reveal a deep stage with very little lighting. Instead of dancers or actors, demonical spirits in glowing skeletal shapes came out from darkness of the backstage.

The audience seemed to be all mesmerized, and when these skeletons came off the stage and took the hands of people in their seats, the silent victims obedient stood up and were led towards the stage. As these people walked deeper into the backstage, their flesh began to disappear and they turned into skeletons also. From the depth of the misty, dark backstage I could hear bone chilling screams of anguish and pain.

Disturbed by this vision, I panned across the front of the church as I came to. I saw a music stand that was oddly shaped somewhat like a cross and I asked someone beside me, “Doesn’t that thing look like a cross?”

“Why yes,” the man answered, “It is exactly shaped like a Saint Catherine’s cross.”

So, without attracting anyone’s attention, I quiet went up and moved the music stand to face the center of the stage. As I got back to my seat, the curtains went up and out of the backstage came not demons, but dancers in brilliant clothes. They leaped, danced and did flips energetically, and all in the audience had a great time.

During the intermission of the show, I tried to tell some of people about the vision I saw, but they all smiled and said, “Yeah, right! Whatever.”

When I thought about this part of the dream, I felt that so many times I treated church as a stage show. So often the services in the church are so similar to show business. I tend to rate the spiritual state of a church by its “Production values” -- Was the choir large? How many pieces of instrument did the worship team use? How many jokes did the preacher tell and how good were they? How sophisticated was the multi-media operation? I would even be impressed with the star quality reputation of the people in service.

But the question remains, “Did the cross take the center stage?”
