In reply to: Dennis Laurie 's message, "Re: Amazed MacKay team admits this publicly" on 05:05:19 03/13/03 Thu

Dennis Laurie writes:
" Nowhere in the release does it state that Mr. MacKay's campaign is not getting calls relating to outright support for his campaign; it merely states that calls are being received by lapsed mambers wishing to come back to the fold."

Margo responds:
It says so right in this paragraph (see *** section)
"Today's Globe and Mail features an article indicating that David Orchard has emerged as a strong second place contender in the delegate selection process currently underway in our Party's leadership race. ***The article has prompted several long-time Party members and supporters to contact the MacKay campaign*** "
((Interestingly they use the word "several". The chuckle is that could be as few as 3 - so don't panic yet folks)))

And Dennis, though your reply is full of talk of "fear", I never actually said a word about the MacKay camp being fearful. You're projecting, Sir!

I dont believe the MacKay Camp *is* fearful at this stage, not one bit: I think they have one brilliant campaign co-manager who knows how to conjure a controversy and how to use the G&M & Pest as their mouthpieces. That story was a press release in article's clothing, pure and simple. The G&M slaps a byline on it, and calls it reporting.

The real story is that this race is already corrupted at a fundamental level by the retention of the "Automatics", those people who get to come and vote there (and at policy conventions) automatically without being elected as delegates in the ridings.

I heard the number of Automatics stated as ***1200*** in Edmonton. That is an INCREDIBLE percentage of delegates who are not elected to do the job and are not representing any particular candidate, and who also mostly probably represent the status quo.

Of a possible 3100 properly-ELECTED delegates, having an additional 30% able to waltz in, be automatic delegates and get to vote, is shockingly undemocratic. (I do not count the riding presidents in this because at least they have been recently-elected to represent ridings in some fashion, they are not just sliding in on privilege, so deduct 301 of those).
