Prentice Calls for Bilingual Regional Debates

OTTAWA, February 12, 2003 - Jim Prentice, federal Progressive Conservative Leadership candidate, is calling for five bilingual regional debates to be held during the Delegate Selection Meeting period between February 27th and April 10th.

"I am committed to the March 2nd debate that will be held in Ottawa. However, I believe that it is important to our party and to the country that the leadership candidates present their vision for the country to as many Canadians as possible during this process," said Prentice from his newly opened Ottawa office. "Particularly I think that it would be a serious mistake for our Party not to hold a debate in the province of Québec."

Prentice is advocating five bilingual debates to be held in Quebec, Atlantic Canada, Ontario, the Prairies, and British Columbia in addition to the debate already planned for March 2nd in Ottawa.

"I encourage all candidates to publicly commit to this idea; it is only by taking advantage of the opportunities presented by this leadership process that we can get our party's message out to Canadians. Those of us who are seeking the leadership have a responsibility to the party membership to use every tool at our disposal to reach out to Canadian voters," stated Prentice. "For our Party this is the first phase of the next federal election. Delegates must be given every chance to judge the abilities of candidates so they can make an informed decision before making their choice on who will lead the alternative to the Chrétien-Martin Liberals on June 1st."
