Sofricus Shadowhawk is black as night
For she was born that way
Her story is an epic plight
She triumphed, I'm happy to say
O Shadowhawk of night so dark
Fly back to the Abbey, to home
Darker than sparrow or jackdaw or lark
No more must the Shadowhawk roam
She was born in a nest overlooking the sea
On the shores of Salamandastron mount
As a child she wished she could fly and be free
But whenever she tried, she fell out.
One day she could fly, and left for the world
And bid all her siblings farewell
They cried till the tears made their wings go all curled
And they were as salty as waves on the swell
O Shadowhawk of night so dark
Fly back to the Abbey, to home
Darker than sparrow or jackdaw or lark
No more must the Shadowhawk roam
She roamed through the skies looking for a place
She could rest and someday soon call home
But there was no place, no bird's nest had some space
Forever it seemed, must she roam!
Till one day Shadowhawk flying over the trail
Heard a sound she picked up with sharp ears
She heard a young badgerbabe give out a wail
And then it quickly burst into tears
O Shadowhawk of night so dark
Fly back to the Abbey, to home
Darker than sparrow or jackdaw or lark
No more must the Shadowhawk roam
She landed by the badger and told it don't fear
Speaking to it in the goshawk's harsh croak
The babe was not afeared of the hawk, that was clear
It let Shadowhawk share its warm cloak
The babe's guardian came and saw the black hawk
At first tried to scare it away
But the babe told how it comforted her with its talk
And they took it to Redwall to stay
Now Shadowhawk lives in the building of stone
she has many friends who adore her
At last she has a place to call home
No more just a wandering soarer
O Shadowhawk of night so dark
Fly back to the Abbey, to home
Darker than sparrow or jackdaw or lark
No more must the Shadowhawk roam
No more must the Shadowhawk roam!
