This the the most difficult concept for non-believers to grasp, since on a man-made judicial level, it does not make sense. So I will explain it here.

The idea that stealing a penny candy from a store is punishible by eternal damnation should give you an idea of just how infinitely holy and divine the Lord is. He is so far removed from sin, that it cannot be in His presence. No sinner can enter His kingdom. Therefore we are all doomed to eternal separation from God, because we are all sinners.

But God sent His very own Son to suffer and die in our place. Besides the excruciating physical torment Jesus suffered, God took every single sin that was ever committed by man, and ever will be committed, and threw them upon His Son to bear. God did this so that by faith we can be made sinless and pure when we die. That is the ONLY way we can be with the Lord. Those who do not accept Jesus as their savior will end up suffering for their own sins, which is eternal damnation and separation from God.

In short, this is why child molesters who receive Christ go to heaven, and life-long good samaritans who rebuke Christ go to hell.

PS: Shouting "I believe in you, Jesus!" right before the prison guard administers the lethal injection for your life of murder doesn't quite cut the mustard. God knows what is in your heart through every second of your life. If you truly accept Jesus as your savior, God will know. Confess it with your heart, not just your mouth.
