There is a lot of slaughter documented in the Bible, as well as murder, murder plots, etc. No question about it. We know of God's involvement in bloody wars and loss of life that are documented in the Bible. But there's a difference between reading about them and accepting the concept as instruction. I don't know of any verse in the Bible that gives free reign to anyone desiring to slaughter others. God did what he did, and we do not question His authority. God also left us with instructions for how we should live our lives. They come from the same authority.

>Killing isn't always illegal though...
Yes, God Himself allows for man's court system to include execution, but within legal guidelines, as in the accused must actually be guilty of murder. This is one of God's teachings that can be read by anyone, and an idea which can be practised by any society.

Whether or not they actually believed their interpretations, or made up interpretations to suit their agendas is unknown to me, since my expertise is not in that realm of history. But we do know that some people use God and the Bible for the wrong reasons. Unfortunately it happens every day.

You already know that the teacher will clarify whatever you need to know about the situation.
In my example, the kids represent the sinful nature of man, and the teacher represents the divine authority of God. You can look at what man does and says and form an opinion of your own ("Well, gee, if the kids are running with scissors, then I'll assume that's what their teacher wants them to do. Boy, their teacher is sure messed up.") or you can learn God's word by getting it straight from God Himself ("Thou shalt not run with scissors.")

>Unless you are saying to take the bible completely literal...
Bingo. That means accepting that God created the universe about 7,000 years ago within six 24-hour days, that Adam and Eve were the first humans on earth, that some people lived to be eight or nine hundred years old, that Noah's flood did happen and it covered the entire earth, that God did part the Sea, that Jonah lived in the belly of a big fish, that Elijah was taken into heaven in a firey chariot, that Jesus was raised from the dead... shall I continue?
