it's the lack of easily viable partners for Michael that throws off the m/m vibe in LFN land and, I think, is one of the central reasons for the absence of a significant amount of m/m.

Walter and Paul are (ageism! ageism!) too old to be star players, though I bet if there were enough m/m to build critical mass, they would have substantial co-star parts to play in crack!fic; as writers start riffing on the central m/m pairs.

Birkoff is hardly too young, though, given the huge number of Clex or Snarry fans - so, there has to be something else going on as well, I think.

Because there certainly are also plenty of other age-appropriate, handsome/quirky males floating about LFN canon who have plenty of fic play - Jurgen, Davenport, Rene, Mick, Helmut - and if you step back to background Section guys you could pull in Chuck, Roger, and a couple of the tall/dark/handsome mission leaders who actually have names and whose faces I can see in my head, but that I can't recall names for just at the moment.

Then you have the fanficishly popular SOTWs, particularly Suba, but also Alec Chandler - in front of whom Michael actually performed a ritual of - at least - bisexualty/bi-availability - Perry Bauer, the Peruze bros, Sparks........and again a handful of others.

While I admit that *none* of these guys, other than Mick perhaps, plays as much of a role in LFN canon as Oz/Spike/Giles/Riley (that I know there names haveing seen 2.5 eps says something about the meta fannish world, doesn't it!) they are hardly absent, and they all do show up fairly reliably in lots of fic.

Do I know what "it" is that has stood between Michael and the man luv?

I suspect, in a word, Nikita. Much as Areyn stands - largely - between John Chriton and any John/other male character OTPs, or Zoe between Wash and the rest of the boys. Whatever else they are Michael, John, and Wash (there are more, but these are the three fandoms I know best right now) are all written and performed as stand-by-my-mate men, and as it happens, they have clear, consistent and unwavering canon attachments. You can pair them with other men, but it takes a lot of work, or alternate time lines, or pre-canon or post-canon settings, or crack!fic. It's not like Dan/Casey or Starksy/Hutch where you have so much to work from, right on the screen. Or men like Mal and Simon who I think are both potentially strong stand-by-my-mate guys, for example, but don't have clear canon attachments - which makes them wonderful game for fic, because it seems so clear that once they have a strong attachment, they will be passionately loyal (in their own quirky ways, yadda, yadda, yadda).

Buffy, on the other hand, seems to pretty acurately reflect the mix and matching dating world of teens/early 20 somethings..... or, at least, that's my impression of it.....
