The latter would be much more enticing (and easier) for me to write, I think because the essential "Section-ness" is still there.
because while I don't necessarily care about sticking to canon events (TPTB killed off all the interesting people; doesn't mean I have to, too :p), I don't think I could ever come with an alternate universe that is as fascinating as Section. In fact, LFN is the only fandom where I do read alternate reality fics - I have absolutely no interest in reading HP Muggle AUs or Buffyverse Human AUs.
I think one could argue that some of my stories are AU in the latter sense, although I strove to make them consistent with all of canon.
Like I said, too much work. ;)
Someone once told me I should try writing AU TR stuff, but I've found it almost impossible to do -- perhaps because Section as an entity is *so* central to the identities of my preferred characters.
Honestly? The only AU fic I can think of right now (I haven't read a lot of them, I'm afraid) that has a believable Paul and Madeline is Gen's BOP. I think it's easier with Michael and Nikita because in the AU stories the focus is more on the romance element, which can be done with or without Section.
