Shawn, I definitely agree with you in regards to the water district being under the umbrella of town government, as well as having the school department part of the town website and not just found in “Related Links”.

However, I disagree with moving away from a town meeting form of government. Every citizen of this town has a right to participate in town meeting or to vote in local elections. The question is what can be done to get these citizens concerned and in partnership with how the town is run? Believe it or not, not everyone who goes to town meeting is part of a special interest group. Most of the attendees are there because they care about what happens to the town. Yes, occasionally a big vote is swayed by different special interest groups in attendance, but shame on the people who are not there to counteract that. A good majority of people are apathetic and only attend town meeting when an issue directly involves them.

As someone actively involved in both the school and town side of government, it continually amazes me to see what will prompt people to go to any type of school/town function. The rash incident is a perfect example. A lot of people who attended that meeting have probably never gone to a town meeting and we’ll never see them again unless there’s something “dramatic” happening. Sorry, folks, but running the town isn’t often dramatic, but something that needs continuous oversight and a genuine interest in the proceedings to make it work. Be there for the mundane events as well as for the drama.
