 His smile was half hearted. He watched her climb the stairs carefully and mused that her attire hadn’t been worn with expectations of fire escape climbing. Once to his level, he extended a hand to help her carefully walk over the grated platform. He sent a mental message to his wife inside. Ashena is here, darling. But his eyes never left the girl that stood in front of him. He could tell from the wrinkle in her brow that she was upset but he didn’t feel like being scolded. She had no right to reprimand him for his actions. “Well, if I upset you, I’m sorry.” His voice was kind of brisk . “I never meant to cause trouble. I didn’t see it coming. He drugged me. But that’s over now. So leave the past the past and don’t be troubled by it .” He let his words settle before speaking again. “It’s chilly out here. Would you like my jacket?” Being dead was a benefit when it came to autumn weather. However, the female was human and the blood on the surface of her skin was retracting inward for warmth. He could see the goose bumps on her arms and he could hear her heart beating the warm blood through her body.
