Subject: Of anti-war protesters, the new world order, and "anti-war protests" protesters!

I think a lot of the “anti-protest” sentiment (people mad about the ant-war protesters) seen in America today is a reaction of fear. America and the world are changing. Europe has all but abandoned the practice of maintaining standing armies. Instead opting to use that economic potential for the betterment of it's people. Only America is still committed to increasing it's military expenditures (we spend more than the rest of the world combined on our military!). And yet I think that many Americans are starting to question this practice through the growing anti-war protest movement. Unless we remain distracted by external threats to our security the American tax payer will balk at supporting our military. When that happens (and it's happening much faster than people think) we will be in the same position as the old USSR. We shall either make the decision to remain competitive economically or our commitment to our military will bankrupt our nation.

This paradigm shift in thinking is quite naturally scary to people, especially given the chaotic state of the world. Communities that are dependent upon government expenditures on the military will be the first to feel the pinch as bases are closed because we can no longer afford to run an inefficient operation. For a nation that spent the last half of the last century armed to the teeth the prospect of living without a standing army of any magnitude is terrifying. And yet face that prospect we must because right now we are in serious peril financially. This will force the world to come up with new ways of dealing with aggressive nations and despotic dictators. Yet as long as America holds to the old way of thinking such progress can not be achieved.

Faced with these changing times people are afraid and are lashing out at those that advocate what they see as rampant pacifism. Yet what is the alternative? A bankrupt America is even more defenseless against an uncertain world. An unarmed, yet economically strong America may seem defenseless, but military might alone has never won any wars. Now more than ever we must learn to rely on brains rather than brawn.
