Although I agree with the concept behind your statment, it will not happen to the U.S. for a long long time. The U.S. will be the last nation on this earth to eliminate its military spending.

You have to look at it this way. The dominant force in the world, no matter who it be, will always be pegged with the so called "world peacekeeping job". This comes from that dominating group having alliances, partnerships, and interests in other countries across the world. Smaller groups do not have that advantage because of their size and/or influence. Lets say this dominant group has relationships with at least 100 different groups. Don't you think that at least a few of these groups are always going to have some kind of 'enemy' at any given time? Because of this, the dominant group gets tied to these conflicts no matter how big or small they are. And we all can rest assured that world peace certainly isn't going to be achieved any time soon, so I think it is safe to assume that the dominant group in the world today will have need for a military force for quite some time.
Now you may respond by saying that there are "economic" ways of dealing with conflicts. Well, the U.S. tries that first every single time. Economic sanctions on Iraq and N.Korea have been in place for a decade now, and still they threaten those around them. What is to be done?
