Skylar entered with quiet strides, not wishing to draw attention to herself. Her dark, guarded eyes slowly traced the path taken by a jagged vein of crows through the chilly, bald face of December sky.

Though she made it something of a point never to be coy, she was not inclined to go about introducing herself to the current inhabitants of the valley. If they were really interested in knowing her they would make the effort themselves. Besides, was she actually interested in learning about them? It seemed too hypocritical to venture the first greeting.

Meanwhile, Skylar settled beneath the custodial fronds of a broad evergreen. The piquant aroma of resin was comfortable, almost welcoming. Perhaps it was the mere presence of familiarity that made her feel like she belonged.

Frozen Dreams

The arrogant stallion sneezed as he approached, dusty hide and midnight mane rippling with the reaction. was it the resin? he laughed behind his eyes. perhaps it was the season in any case he dipped his crania to the earth in greeting, usually impassive pallet tinged with curiosity. but not enough of it for the appearance to be genuine. dark hued forlock fell into deep lamps as he gazed over the newcomer. he nodded, and another sneeze escaped him. he took a moment to collect himself, stepping away from the tree and inhaling the distinctive smell of the valley. crimson lning flashed briefly before he dipped pate again and came forward.

Welcome to Evil Valley, I am Frozen Dreams.

blah blah.. formalities, formalities. they were growing old. newcomers had been coming in hoards lately, not that that wasn't good. and not that he was a veteran of many seasons indeed he'd arrived only shortly before the onslaught.
He fixed distracted eyes on the mare, his authoritative posture was fixed, and umwavering save the rhythmic swish of tail, and the way he held his left foreleg slightly above the ground, as if resting it.

Skylar, after regarding him silently for a moment, concluded that his proclamation didn't merit a response. She had a comparatively low threshold for society and its trappings.

Frozen Dreams

The arrogant stallion was more than a little irked by her lack of response and expressed this with a snort and the shifting of his bulk around his three stationary feet. the fourth one remained poised above the ground. he would have walked away but, proud as he was, the comical shuffling dance the instability of three feet caused him was more comical than not. and he hated to be belittle, especially on first meetings. so he stayed standing, firey gaze fiexed on the mare, tail swishin against his hide, with a little more energy as he found the outlet for his angst.

The dark-eyed mare repressed a derisive snort as she watched his discomfort unfold like the pages of a book. Really, this was too easy to be fun. Skylar liked her social challenges on the impossible side of difficult.

"I'm Skylar," she remarked with a lazy smile, and left it at that. To instigate prolonged conversation was like digging oneself into a hole with particularly slippery sides.

Frozen Dreams

Being tired of the conversation himself he nods distractedly at her name, and turns his deep lamps on the valley, fixing the terra with a cold stare. bristling with angst he couldn't source. he idly shifted his weight. shutting himself off, walling himself in thought.

Skylar, being Skylar, had little interest in anyone else's problems, but noted that his vast unease seemed out of place. Usually, she sensed, he took pride in being strong and courageous...he was arrogant. But the injury had sent his egocentric deportment awry.

"What happened?" She queried bluntly. Why skirt the crux of the whole matter? She enjoyed making others sweat, anyway.

Frozen Dreams

His auds levelled back against his skull, and he flinched as if struck. turning he levelled his eyes with hers, narrowed slightly. he studied her a moment before muttering a calculated and icy reply to her query.

I had a fight.

he didn't state the obvious. that he'd lost. that he hadn't been good enough. he shrugged his gaze to one side, staring intently at a bird perched nearby. the unmistakeable signal that he'd had enough of th topic of conversation.

She shrugged, uncharacteristically liberal. "The last time I got into a fight I got very badly hurt. It's a pity that I didn't win, because the guy on the other side was a completely sexist jerk. I suppose my losing that entire battle was his way of proving his point."

"Oh well. I try not to dwell on it."

Auds swivelled back again, signalling that he as paying attention to what she said, he had at least that much respect. arrogant as he was, he wasn't sexist so he nodded at her words, but added few of his own, still seething under the surface, too many flares of his temper in a short time was making him irritable on a whole.

Too bad.

hid deep lamps continued to survey the singing bird and the look in them suggested that when he found it he owuld eat it for breakfast.

She eyed him skeptically, annoyed. He was turning out to be just what she'd originally thought: another typical male egotist, too protective of his worthless pride to be self-deprecating, too narcissistic to have a little fun with his own mistakes.

Suddenly, Skylar decided she didn't have tme for this. She wasn't planning on waiting for him to nurse his self-esteem back to health. "You don't need to tell me that you lost your fight; it's written all over you face. But for Godsake, stop acting like it's the end of the bloody world. So your confidence got stepped on. Losing builds character."

Skylar left him alone to brood. Let him ferment in his own cursed company, she thought to herself as she departed.

Frozen Dreams

He watched her depart. shrugging it off with indiffernce. only to have the thought tug at the corners of his mind again moments later. he tried to ignore it, looking again out of the terra. thisdistraction failed, as he knew every inch of his home better than he knew his own heart. He sighed heavily, deep lamps losing their lustre, now that there was no one around to see. The truth was, he admitted reluctantly, he was tired of being alone, friendless. if he had wanted to be alone, why had he ever come to Evil Valley?
His crania slid from side to side, large sweeping gestures, encompassing the whole of the Valley below his hill. snapped cannon hanging like a ghalf deflated balloon from the end of his leg, several inches above the ground. His dusted hide darkened with the approaching darkness of winter nights. He knew the answer. he just wasn't ready to take on the unfamiliar world of sociality. his carefully condtructed walls were perfection in his eyes and to take them down he felt might have been sacriligious.
But here he was. alone on a hilltop, accompanied by the whistlings of wind. doomed to look on forever from the top, never daring to lower himself to the standards of society.
