Subject: BC Forest Fires

As mentioned earlier in the week, BC is battling over 350 forest fires. Over 10,000 people have been evacuated from their homes and only a relative handful have yet been allowed to go back. Several new fires began last night due to lighning strikes. Our premier has declared a state of emergence for the province.

At midnight last night, my husband, the regional search and rescue coordinator for our area (Fraser Valley) and local search and rescue member, received a call that members were needed to head up to evacuate yet another town - Salmon Arm (ya, ya, I know - salmon don't have arms - they have fins)He is now spending the next 72 hours mobilizing people to go up and help with the situation in the interior before being flown up there himself. Although he will not be in any danger himself (this time), going into a fire threatened area always carries with it an element of risk. Your thoughts and prayers for all the people displaced by the fire, as well as for the safety of all those involved with the firefighting/rescue efforts would be greatly appreciated.

We were supposed to be leaving for Vancouver Island tomorrow for my cousin's wedding and my nephew's 2nd birthday. I am still going to go with the kids but will be missing the DH terribly as we had this holiday planned for months and now he will be unable to come with us. I know, that is a minor thing compared to what is going on in our province and I am very proud of the DH for the job he is doing.

One note, search and rescue, with the exception of the military, is a volunteer organization. None of these people are paid for what they do. Many people will be missing work and will not be making money, they do what they do out of the goodness of their hearts and their desire to help others.

[> Brenda, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your precious DH at this time. My husband is a police officer and also in Iraq right now (Natl. Guard Reserves, he's been away almost 6 months now) so I well know what it's like to sit home and worry. And all those that volunteer to help and put their lives on the line are the true heroes of the world! You have much to be proud of, God bless you both. And big hugs to both you and your family. Hang in there!! -- Linda in sw va, 15:07:58 08/06/03 Wed

[> [> [> Thank you Brenda! Yes, I do miss him, my heart aches. Have you heard from your hubby? How are the fires going? Can he check in often to let you know he's ok? -- Linda - getting tired of typing in the sw va part. *G*, 10:08:34 08/07/03 Thu

[> [> [> [> [> Yes Martina, I have been lucky in that he's been able to call quite often and sometimes email too. :) He waits in line for the phone or the computer for hours so I sent him one of those handheld football games to give him something to do. lol No definite word on when he may be coming home but there is a possibility that he could be home in a couple of months. I'm hoping my little heart out!! -- Linda, 18:12:36 08/08/03 Fri

[> I think these people that give their time, sweat & energy on a volunteer basis are unbelievable. Especially when you think that they are losing money or have to be in a dangerous situation away from their own families. The unsung heroes - isn't that the term for these folks. I'm sorry your DH won't be able to make your trip with you and the kids. I'm sure his help will be much appreciated by all involved. My heart and prayers go out to all these people and to you and yours. -- Lori, 18:14:52 08/06/03 Wed

[> Thank you all for your good wishes. Once again, your powers to do wonderful and amazing things have worked. Doug was able to get his crew together and got them sent on their way. Then, the past coordinator told Doug that he was willing to coordinate the next crew, which meant Doug was able to spend a couple days with us on the island and was able to attend my cousin's wedding (which was lovely, by the way). He has just headed home now. Also, the firefighters are starting to make some headway in controlling the blazes. Thanks to all of you for enabling this to come about. -- Brenda, 22:30:11 08/10/03 Sun
