Subject: How do you celebrate halloween?

I thought, that since we have such a spiritually diverse and open-minded group of people here, I would post this question: Do you celebrate Halloween? If so, how?

[> For myself, Halloween is mainly just a fun time for my kids. We carve pumpkins, make halloween cookies, and the kids wear their costumes and go trick-or-treating in the neighbourhood. Not very spiritual for me, I know, but I get an enormous amount of pleasure from watching my kids have a great time! -- Brenda, 11:45:44 10/29/03 Wed

[> We don't have Halloween as a tradition here - we've loads of traditions, which have its source in some pagan ritual - but no Halloween in Germany. Lately, maybe during the last 5 years or so, shops began to pick up on the US Halloween, but it has no roots here. As for wearing costumes we do have Fasching/Karneval (Mardi Gras) in Febuary. But no trick or treat in any case. - Brenda, did you see my massage on the SB a couple of days ago? It scrolls so fast away overthere! -- Antje, 13:21:30 10/29/03 Wed

[> [> hahhahaha, I meant message! LOL - In case you hadn't seen it. Andrea showed us piccis from Surrey and gave Martina your bag :-) But I guess she e-mailed you already? Anyway, it was nice to "see" you :-) -- Antje, 13:25:55 10/29/03 Wed

[> [> [> Hi Antje. Yes, I did see your message on the SB. I have decided that, in the future, I will not stand beside Colly in a photo. She is such a wee little thing and my hips looked a tad bovine-like next to her petite little self *g* I was glad to meet Andrea and finally learned how to pronounce your name properly! -- Brenda, 13:45:06 10/29/03 Wed

[> [> [> [> oh Brenda, I didn't see any hips on ANY pictures!! You AND Colly are two beautiful women, I find you look like an italian movie star (do you have italian ancestors?) and Colly like an Angel or a Fairy!!! I love both your hair, Collys and yours, I'd give something to have hair like either one of you! :-) - as for my name, well it's hard on English tongues :-) -- Antje, 02:53:29 10/30/03 Thu

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> I am wondering if Andrea can post them in one of our photo albums, perhaps? Andrea??? Btw, Andrea, after Surrey, I will always associate you with the phrase "No f***ing way!". This was Andrea's comment when confronted with canned haggis as part of a "Hosed Fear Factor" that was played. -- Brenda, 19:24:04 10/31/03 Fri

[> I am a celtic pagan (mostly druidic in practice mixed with a little bit of alot of other stuff) and I celebrate this both as "The Feast of the Dead" honoring our ancestors and the Celtic New Year. It's a time when the growing things have died and we enter a new phase of the year. I am celebrating with a close friend up in Canada this weekend (yay - a girls weekend!) and we will do a traditional celtic "Samhain" ritual. Hope everyone's Halloween is fun, scary & booooootiful (sorry, I couldn't resist). And happy Samhain to those who are followers of that. -- Lori, 20:34:30 10/29/03 Wed

[> I don't celebrate halloween. Not for any religous or spiritual reason, just that it isn't celebrated in Australia. -- KatieM, 04:03:04 10/30/03 Thu

[> [> When I was younger, there was alot more mischief going on. Now it's pretty much all about the Trick or Treat. Teenagers used to smash pumpkins in the streets, throw eggs at everything, and throw toilet paper around (ingeniously called "toiletpapering" haha What you do is hold the end of the roll and then throw the roll so that it all comes out like a big long streamer. If you do it right, you can decorate entire trees and statues.) Oh and we can't forget about spraying shaving cream all over the place. You get the idea. These days, there are specific hours for trick or treat and the big kids have parties, if they don't still go out to get as much candy as possible. My 10 yr old and 13 yr old both have friends coming over because this is a nice big neighborhood. *G* My 17yr old has a party to go to. I pass out candy while my husband goes with my little one. And it will be nice weather, too. -- Lissa, 14:45:32 10/31/03 Fri

[> [> [> Oh Lissa, in Friday's front page newspaper there was a pic of a town in CT. One street had every tree TP'ed. Wanted to post it here as an explaination to your post but unfortunately this pic is not online at the newspaper:(! Around here mischief night is almost nonexsistent. There were a few spots of toilet paper morning after halloween. I wondered if those houses didn't have candy?! -- JeanClaire*, 07:12:01 11/03/03 Mon
