Well.... yesterday, we went go for our normal Suday walk. He gets to wear a booty on his left rear paw as he drags it so much... since he's been losing his back legs for about a year now. Get him out of the car... and he cannot stand. His left rear leg just collapses, or he is not going to put any weight on it. Hmmmm... check it for any obvious exterior wound/damage. Nothing. He collapses, time and time again... as he keeps trying to walk... basically dragging himself with his front legs. After a bit of this (his mom is in tears, bad, and although I am upset inside, I pick him up, carry him to the car, and we drive home.

By eveningm his left rear foot and lower leg up to the first joint is swelling. I have to carry him out to the yard and hold him up to do his business.

This morning, mom calls the vet and gets an appt for this afternoon. (it's when the good vet gets in). I get a hysterical call at work because mid-morning he drags himself to the back door. Pat tries to lift him, she tries to get him in the assist sling we have, no avail. I come home from work carry him out, he goes.

We eventually get to the vet. He has no fever, temp is normal. The leg does not appear sprained or broken. However, now the swelling is above the knee and approaching the hip. His left rear leg and paw are three times the diameter of the right one..........

Vet gives him a shot of dexamethazone, says it looks like edema, but cause unknown. We get home with a bottle of Tramadol for the pain, and another bottle of Prednisone.

The pred is two pills a day for 7 days. Then one pill a day for 7 days, then 1/2 pill every other day until gone. Oh, yeah, place a pepcid ac into him before we give the pred so as to coat/settle the stomach.

Anyone have any words on the use of prednisone?

We're just trying to get the swelling down and get him semi-ambulatory again.

Please say a word or two in cyber space for my big man. He's my heart... and it's tearing me up. Hug your kids.....
