There are ways of convincingly integrating truly minor characters into a believable LOTR fic. For example, the winner of the Mithril Awards' Best OC award, "The Rooster Man of Gondor" didn't even have a *person* to work with, just the sound of a rooster crowing. It was brilliant and convincing.

I've seen two fics about the unnamed Haradric character who was killed by Faramir's men--the one Sam wonders about when the man literally falls in front of him.

The problem with Figwit is that the initial reason for his being noticed was Teh Hawtness, and that dictated his fanonical 'personality'. A few authors have tried to do something with "Melpomaen" (I think that's his elvish name in fandom) that wasn't horribly fanonically stupid, but the fact that it had to be Figwit has largely rendered it impossible for me to think well of such fics. I admit, it's prejudice, but for God's sake, at that level, it doesn't matter what the extra's name or hair-color is; he's just a prop. Pick another prop, please, and don't buy into the craptastic fanonical fic frenzy...
