In reply to: Doyle 's message, "I remember..." on 00:03:58 01/04/04 Sun

so in general, how did you like it? what were your favourite / least favourite bits?

I can't remember exactly the list I posted, so I shall compose a short, new one.

WARNING! SPOILERS FOR "RETURN OF THE KING" BELOW!

SPOILER WARNING!

Liked:

Pippin's song (which I've already downloaded :) ),

A lot of the characters a lot more in this one (Boromir, Eowyn, Theoden, etc),

The sketched pics of the characters at the credits,

Yet more grand battles, although I think that even the biggest out of this movie wasn't *quite* as good as the 45 minute fight scene in TTT. I think the imagery in TTT was just...so much better. Helm's Deep was a very strong, very prevailant image, and the attack upon it was a lot easier to keep up with (to me) than the many fronts of attack in RotK. And then you've got the really clear, really symbolic imagery of Gandalf, all in white, leading Rohan's banished forces back again down that steep slope, driving the orcs between them and Helm's Deep, with the sun cresting the rise behind them just as Gandalf shouts that warrior cry. To me, there was nothing about this battle in RotK that had as much punch. It just...wasn't as memorable to me. Anyhoo, I also liked...

Legolas and the Olyphant ;) ,

Aragorn's "For Frodo", and then slow-mo run at the bad guys,

Gandalf kicking ass,

Legolas in that blue tunic. DAMN!,

Character development for those who didn't get much before,

Frodo's final smile after boarding the ship at the end,

and dear, sweet, brave Sam.

I know there's lots more, but I can't remember it all just now, either.

Didn't like so much...

*The lead wraith's outfit...he looked like Shredder, from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

*The lead not-orc guy...he looked a lot like that dude from "Goonies".

*The many, many, MANY "plains of passage", and "caverns of the dead", and "battles of Jehuzephet", and "Sword of Isildor" and so on, and so on. Though I know this was J.R.R.'s fault, and not Peter Jackson's.

*The loss of screen time for some of the actors who got some in the first two movies, though it was understandable since we had to have MORE character development for the likes of Pippin and such, which I liked.

I think there was more I didn't like, too, but I can't remember much of it.

Over all, I'd say it makes a satisfactory ending to the trilogy, and while I can't like it *quite* as much as "Fellowship", I liked it as much as "Two Towers", certainly. Each one had stuff in it that was better than the other, or worse than the other, but most all of it was totally necessary, so I like them both equally. All in all, I'm mostly struck by the sheer perfection of the trilogy as a whole. It's the first set of movies to live up to the potential of the first one (in my opinion), other than the original Star Wars trilogy, which has for the first time in two decades been supplanted in my mind as my favourite trilogy.

I know a few people in the theatre complained about the ending, which seemed (to them) to drag on after nearly stopping a few times, but I think it was absolutely necessary...there was just so much stuff to wrap up! After investing two years into these characters (just from a movie standpoint), and this story, I was sad to see it come to an end. It was ....epic, on a scale you don't often see. So I was glad to see everything wrapped up.

I've heard it said that "Fellowship" is Frodo's movie, and the "Two Towers" belongs to Gollum / Smeagol. If that's true, I really believe that "Return of the King" is as much about Sam as Aragorn, if not more so. Of course, I love Aragorn's destined acceptance of his line and destiny, but to me there's something far more grand about Sam's loyal, country boy, good-hearted, unswerving dedication that gets to me a hell of a lot more. I mean...come on. "I can't carry it for you....but I can carry you!" Gah. I think I misted up at that scene the first time through (I also cried at the end, natch, and misted up again a little during Pippin's song, voiced over Boromir's ride to doom). And then he finally had the courage at the end to ask his girl to marry him! *sigh* I'm love Sam. I'm love Frodo. I'm love Pippin. Merry's okay ;) Nah, just kidding. He's totally cool, he's just not one of my favourites of the movie. Though I did like him and Pippin at separation, they were so cute!

Okay, so this has turned out to be not so short. Ah well. It was thoroughly excellent, and now I can't wait until next Christmas when I can buy the whole trilogy on DVD all together.
