Whoa, silver, that must be one of your longest movie review posts yet. Tho, of course, mine always tend to go on forever (I'm surprised if anyone ever reads my *entire* reviews;)

(these aren't my words, but they express the one constant thought I've had since I left the theatre)

"I'm not sure why, but I found the scene of Gollum falling into the firey chasm etched into my memory after seeing the film. Perhaps it was the look upon his face as he fell into the cracks of Mt. Doom, clutching the ring. That gleeful, joyous expression at being reunited with the one and only thing he loved, seconds before plunging into the molten lava. Realizing his situation, as he slips beneath the river of fire, he holds his hand up in a last, futile effort to save his precious. I was moved and saddened that his demise, along with the destruction of the ring, seemed to be the only true way he could ever be at peace."

Nothing else from the movie has stuck in my mind quite like that part. And I can't say why but I think (at this stage) it is my fav part. Maybe that makes me sick (my fav scene being where someone dies) but after Gollum/Smeagol became my fav character (pretty much during the first movie), the one thing I was mainly wanting to see in the third movie was how his part in the story ended. My younger cousin had let slip after I saw TTT that Gollum was gonna die. For awhile I wasn't believing him but eventually I accepted it. Luckily, tho, I stayed away from anything/anyone that'd spoil me further. I didn't even finish reading my book on how they created Gollum because it featured Andy Serkis talking about his experience on the movie, and I got up to where he was talking about his most difficult scene - Gollum's death scene. So I put the book down and stayed away from it until I saw the movie so at least I didn't know *how* he died. And man, am I thankful I did that. Someone else's comment that I read about the scene said, "When I first saw the scene it seemed weird since it didnt look like he reacted, but the second time I saw it I noticed he does react, and his skin does burn (although probably not as realistic as it could be, but hey its PG-13)". That really didn't bother me so much, as I was fully focused on his reaction to catching the ring and holding it close to him as he fell. I think that bit will stay in my mind the longest.

Moving on, now to break it down to a much more simple-to-read point form:

Liked:

*Well since I'd read your original only vaguely spoilery post about the movie beforehand, I was expecting Pippin's song. When I first saw you mention it, I cringed at the sheer thought but it wasn't really cringe-worthy at all. Tho it kinda sounded like he was in a recording studio, that his voice was being tweaked *as* he sung to make it sound alright. The scene woulda been better had that wretched king not been eating so noisily and grossly, don't you agree?

*I agree, alot of the characters who hadn't gotten much screen time/development in the first two movies, finally getting it here was well deserved (darn tootin'!). I even liked Faramir (that's who you'd meant in your post wasn't it? Not Boromir, correct?) who hadn't really made any sort of impression with me in TTT as well as Eowyn (she kicked witch king ARSE in this movie!) Hell, I even felt sorry for Faramir when he confronted his bastard of a father who basically told him, "I wish you were dead instead of Boromir." I really wanted Faramir to *live* after that scene (and really wanted Denethor the steward *dead*).

*Another bit I was expecting after reading your original post - the sketched pics of the characters at the end credits, totally rocked (wish I'd done them:) And it made the end credits of the final film that much more special.

*I think the main battle that went on at (can't think of it's long, complicated name) the place with the oliphants rocked actually. Or maybe I'm thinking of a different battle. They all seem to mesh in my mind at this point in time. I'm *definitely* not meaning the final battle involving the big eagles - that was pretty ho-hum. But I think alot of thought went into the huge battles in this film (especially the ones with the catapults and the oliphants - were they the same one?).

*Legolas and the Oliphant (j/k *g* well, partially;) It *was* pretty kewl how he single-handedly took out a war elephant and its drivers then Gimli's, "That still only counts as one!" made it amusing.

*Speaking of Gimli being amusing, *I* found his one liners/jokes much more commical in this film than TTT.

*Again, I agree, Gandalf kicking arse. You do mean (in particular) that bit where he was whirling his staff and sword around at one point, ya? If not, well, that's when I was thinking, "Oh yeah, go Gandalf!"

*Legolas in that blue tunic (j/k again;)

Didn't like so much:

*You're right, the witch king *did* kinda look like shredder with that helmet. All in all he just felt like a substitute for Sauron himelf (in physical form of course) like he was in the beginning of FOTR. I was SO hoping to see Sauron become more than just an eye but *sigh* all he did was be a lighthouse. Also didn't like that orcish guy (the one with the disfigured face). Okay, so *none* of 'em were exactly "pretty" but I'm talkin' 'bout the one some person described as being like one of those mutants out of Total Recall. He sucked.

*The lack of main characters killed. I know, this sounds strange (*me* being bloodthirsty?? That's usually you're arena, silver;) But man, I was always expecting *someone* important out of the good guys to not make it. And dad had actually said that someone had led him to believe something bad happened to Sam in ROTK. Of course, I went off at him for telling me this, pointing out I'd been staying away from spoilerish stuff on *purpose* to avoid such info. So during ROTK I was totally thinking Sam was gonna die and fully expected him to several times during it (mostly when Frodo and Gollum were struggling for the ring in Mount Doom. I thought Sam would do a stupid thing like charge at Gollum, sending both of them over the edge into the lava and Frodo would survive. Luckily, I was wrong (sorta).

*The song kind of disappointed me (from what I heard of it). Tho we were being rushed to leave 'cause the ppl wanted to clean the theatre before the next mob came in. I'll be sure to listen to more of it upon my second viewing. Anyways, the point is, my fav end credits song of the three movies was from FOTR. 'Gollum's Song' (the one at the end of TTT) was *different* but not too bad. This one I'm not too sure about yet.

Final comments:

About the ending/s. Yes, there were multiple spots towards the end where where everyone (including myself) in the theatre thought it was *the end* but low and behold once the screen faded to black it still wasn't over. This got a bit tiring (I thought) after the second "ending" shot. Can't remember what exactly the different ones were. And I would've been quite happy with one of those first two since the *real ending* I thought wasn't quite as good an ending as those other "false endings" (still with me?). But I do realise, like you said, it was necessary. And it was nice to see Sam have a family.

Dad, mum and my nana who all saw it with me were the ones who pointed out that Frodo was actually sailing off into uh...some kind of afterlife at the end. I didn't get that when I saw it I'm slightly ashamed to say. Just checking, is that correct? (since you read the books). If so, well, I dunno what to think of it. It definitely didn't make me cry (nothing in this movie did actually. The only one that sort of made me tear up a little was FOTR) - but then, I didn't realise Frodo was going into the afterlife/whatever. I just thought he was continuing on to another adventure or something. But I guess it makes sense that he was dying since (as dad pointed out) he'd mentioned that sword wound and (as mum pointed out) Galadriel said something about the time of the three rings being over or whatever plus in TTT Gandalf said he was only back till the task was over or some such so it made sense he was on the boat as well. If you could explain what exactly was going on in this scene to me and why Galadriel was with them it'd be alot more clear to me:)

I'm still unsure of my overall opinion of the movie at the moment. Need to see again before I have my final rating of it. All I know is this LOTR trilogy is something I'm never gonna forget and I don't think any movie is going to beat these three films (in my mind) - at least not for some time. I was just holding onto hope that I'd make it to this final film (something unfortunate could've suddenly happened to me between TTT and this one). There was only one movie I absolutely *had* to see and this was it. And now I have. Just like BTVS was a show that sucked me in and got me completely enthralled in it (in it's early years at least), these three films have done the same and I thank Peter Jackson for creating them and despite what anyone else says, I think they're three of the best movies I've seen.
