Subject: Some points from a neutral.

Nicky Butt was awesome, if Patrick Vieira had given that performance the media would have wet themselves. This fact may well be overlooked simply because he's a Man United player, which is a shame. Ditto Paul Scholes.

Rio Ferdinand was wonderful and commanded everything. He and Campbell look a good partnership, a passer and a brick wall; which is what almost all good sides have been founded upon. Heskey was excellent, he often won the ball of Zanetti in central midfield and Scholes and Butt could build attacks from there.

Impressed with your ability to keep the ball and draw the sting from the Argentinians, Aimar looked a shadow of his Valencia self.

Had Batistuta won the penalty that Owen did, he'd be a cheating latino bastard. But for Owen, 'its all part of the modern game..'

All in all, its 31 sides playing around until Italy win it. We all know this.

The team needed its balance, and the sooner England stop trying to put square pegs in round holes the better, which is why Sinclair (and the side) looked so effective in comparison to the Sweden game, where Heskey playing left side made you look disjointed.

[> Neutral? Oh, I see. That must have been a Faroe Islands flag you posted yesterday then. -- OMP, 15:59:19 06/07/02 Fri (193.133.143.241)

[> [> You want me to be critical? Okay. England were dire and unimaginative for 45 minutes against Sweden, and played in a similar fashion for a similar time against Argentina. The only difference today was that no England defender ballsed up to give the opposition an equaliser. -- Marlowe, 16:05:19 06/07/02 Fri (217.35.23.95)

[> [> [> Good analysis up top, but a bit harsh there I reckon. The Argies were on top for 20 minutes rather than 45 and I think it was understandable that leading 1-0 against one of the best sides in the World we didn't pour forward with carefree abandon. More a clever tactical change than poor play on Englands part I reckon. -- Jesus Quintana, 16:12:46 06/07/02 Fri (195.92.168.171)

[> [> [> [> I was being hyper-critical. I thought that a lot of England in the second half, bar one move for Sheringhams volley was similar to the first half against Sweden. The first 20-25 minutes, England were defending far too deep for that stage and Argentina were the better side, England were far and away the better side in the next 40 minutes or so and I thought were deserving of their lead. The 4 defenders and the keeper didn't make a single mistake all game, so deservedly won the game. Fair play to you all, its a million and one miles away from anything that we could ever do internationally. -- Marlowe, 16:19:14 06/07/02 Fri (217.35.23.95)

[> Look – we'll probably bollox it all up next Wednesday morning but today – even i was on me fookin' feet for much of that match, albeit @ home with a nice Port Saut/Peppered Salami/Tomato and Branston Pickle Baguette offset with a dash of 100% Fat-Free vinagrette... [> I would say that although we were a mite lucky with the penalty (Both in winning it and in scoring it) we totally deserved the win. The chances we had to extend the lead were all crackers. (We should have HAMMERED them) and Sheringham's volley after 17 passes would have been one of the greatest goals of all time had it gone in. I didn't like the way we sat back towards the end though. Perhaps two up front would have given us more breathing space. I also feel that Beckham faded fast towards the end. He should have been replaced. We do still need to beat Nigeria! -- Tommy the Silkman, 16:50:29 06/07/02 Fri (193.237.226.233)

[> [> Pretty much agree with that, although I thought Beckham should have stayed on, taking Owen off for Bridge seemed a good decision. Sven was spot on in terms of subs...I was a bit worried when he brought Sinclair on but he seemed to come good. -- Pat_M, 16:56:58 06/07/02 Fri (194.129.26.3)

[> [> Sitting back was spot on. It's what both Senegal and Uruguay have done against France and in both those games and today I knew there would be no more goals. Alright they had a lot of possession and corners but not many chances. It was very refreshing to see England display a little professionalism rather than continue to attack corinthian style and throw away a well earnt win. -- Jesus Quintana, 17:07:18 06/07/02 Fri (195.92.168.171)

[> [> [> Sitting back is one thing but we let them camp in our penalty area for ten minutes. Against players like that it only takes one moment of magic or dodgy dive and bang, its 1-1. Slightly further forward and we could have taken it out of the danger area and into the corners or even had another chance to seal it... Not great to watch but a damn sight safer. I just hope Beckham will have the time to recover for Wednesday. -- Tommy the Silkman, 17:11:32 06/07/02 Fri (193.237.226.233)
