Weather here in upstate NY has been weird all winter too. We get several inches of snow one day, and a few days later it's in the high 30s or low 40s, and the cellars are full of water or keeping the sump pumps running. Thank God it hasn't been as cold this winter as it normally is, as the price of fuel oil, gas and electric power are all through the roof. In spite of a very mild season, we have had 3 months when our utility bills were over $500, one almost $600. That includes natural gas and electricity. So there went the money that we would have saved, from quitting smoking last Feb., to the oil mongers. C'est la vie!

Glad to see that you found your way back here ok. It makes a lot of sense to me to get the stuff way ahead like you are doing, but if it was me, I'd build permanent shutters and put them on hinges like the old houses used to have years ago. Then folks could swing the shutters closed in a hurry, latch them shut and they'd have the hatches battened down in a flash. I always wished my dad hadn't removed all the ones that were on this old house, they were louvered too, so you could open them a bit to see if it was all clear outside yet. My mother didn't like having to paint them every few years, so one time when Daddy took them all down to paint, she convinced him to leave them down. Eventually they threw them away. We seldom get bad windstorms in this area, but when we do, it would be handy to have them as things get airborn and wind up blocks away from where they started out sometimes. If I lived where hurricanes, tornadoes and other windy storms were prevalent, I do believe I'd insist on having shutters installed or at least make ones that could be put up quickly and latched into place when needed and stored for future use.

Anyhoot, it's nice hearing from you Sande, don't be a stranger around here.
Peace and love,
Betty
