  I just got off the phone with one of my favorite nieces. Debbie has an aneurysm behind the right frontal lobe, and she will be having surgery as soon as it can be scheduled. She had a stroke a couple of years ago that left her partially paralyzed on one side and thus unable to work. Lately she has been falling down a lot, and the local doctors couldn't find the problem, so they sent her to the hospital in Albany while they ran more tests last weekend. This week she had to go have more tests, and they finally found the problem. The doctors want to do the surgery as soon as possible, hopefully within the next few days. Of course Debbie is stressed about having to go through this, especially since she just found out two weeks ago that one of her aunts that she is very fond of has cancer that is inoperable.
  
  Debbie is my second oldest brother Tom's oldest living child, my second oldest niece, and we just recently renewed our relationship after many years of not seeing each other. She had lived out of the area for many years but moved back to town this past fall. She came knocking on my door a few days before Christmas and has been coming over several times a week since then. She has a generous nature, and although she suffers from depression and is on medication for that, almost always finds something to say or do to make me smile. These past few months we have shared many old memories and spent lots of hours catching up on each other's lives. She asked me to add her Aunt Faye to my prayer list and to ask my online friends to also pray for her too.
  
  I should know more tomorrow after Debbie sees her doctor again, but in the meantime, I would appreciate all the prayers you can spare for her and for Faye. Thanks in advance, as I know many of you will do that.
  
  I am very tired tonight though I can't imagine why, haven't done much the past couple of days except fix dinner and a few little oddball things around the house, but nothing heavy, as I have been "dragging" since Thursday. I think the old bird will be hitting the roost real soon as it's been a busy day of visiting here and talking to my "out of town kid" on the phone. Tom did the dishes tonight, but I cooked the dinner; roast pork, fresh aspargus, cheesy white sauce, mashed potatoes, and of course, gravy. (Cholesterol delight, eh?) Oh well, we only live once, and what is the sense of being if you can't enjoy the food too?

  I know all about Cinco de Mayo. Few Americans know how that holiday originated.
  Most think it is a celebration but is is really a day of mourning.
  Most people don't know that in 1912, Hellmann's Mayonnaise was
  manufactured in England. The Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the
  condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be
  the next port of call for the great ship after New York City. The people
  of Mexico eagerly awaited the first delivery and were very upset at the
  news of the sinking. So much so that they declared a national day of
  mourning which they still observe today. It is known, of course, as:

  I've been thinking about all of you very much, and wondering how you all were. I know i say this every time i pop in, but i'd like to say i'm still sorry for the way i was a few years ago. I miss you all a lot - and there isn't a day that goes by without something reminding me of one of you.
  
  I hope you're all well, and that life is treating you with kindness - what have you all been up to these last months? (some of you it would be *years* since i've seen/spoken to you)...
  
  As an update...i'm in my final year of my psychology degree now, but am planning on enrolling in a masters degree after this in counselling psychology, so i won't be finished studying for a long time! Other than university, which takes up most of my time, i'm working part time as a medical receptionist, and living at a residential college at my university. I'm the college choir director this year, and college photographer (i'm also getting occaisional freelance photography jobs, which is exciting)...I'm also an equity and harrassment officer for my university, which is challenging but good experience for my degree.
  
  I've also taken up ballet to stay fit, and discovered a hidden passion for dance. Dance is rapidly becoming my sanity saviour - a good way to take time out during my fairly hectic life.
  
  Other than that...hmmm...i don't know what else to say...again, missing you all a lot...i get your forwards every now and again Steve, which is always nice - i'm sorry i don't reply, i'm ridiculously busy. Not a good enough excuse though...i'll try to be better in the future!!

  Her daughter Melanie was attacked and assaulted by three older girls on Tues. about a block from her school. She took quite a beating at their hands (and feet) while about 80 witnesses stood by and watched. She spent the night in the hospital having all kinds of tests, etc. and is home now resting and healing.

  I just wanted to thank you all for your prayers for Mike and Jackie. Jackie came out of the respiratory distress and is home and doing better. The doctor told her this week that she had already turned blue and the doctors and nurses were praying she would make it but really didn't think she had a chance. They just didn't know the power of our holas family's prayers. :)
  You always come through when I need you and I thank you again. I really believe that prayer is all that pulled Jackie through. *HUGS* to a wonderful family

  My baby brother called and told us that his wife was put in the hospital sunday afternoon with pneumonia. She went into respiratory failure early this morning and they rushed her to surgery for an open lung biopsy. She is now on a respirator in intensive care and has been diagnosed with Acute Respiratory Distess Syndrome and the doctors are giving her a 50% chance of living at best. They have not gotten the result of the lung biopsy yet but should hear from that tomorrow. She is very sick and her chances are looking slim. Please keep her and my brother in your prayers. Her name is Jackie and my brother's name is Michael. Thank you for always being here.

  My friend and nextdoor neighbor JoAnn asked me to post this message for her, to thank all of you for your prayers and support over these past few months, especially this past week since her mom died. It means a lot to her that you would take time to offer support to her, and pray for her family, especially since you don't know her.
  
  I ask that you also please continue to remember her in your prayers now, as these past two plus years have been very stressful on her, and she has physical problems as well. I have been of little support to her or anyone else for the past year because of my depression, and I've failed to let her or others know that I do care and I do hold you all in my prayers always even when I walk the dark valley alone.

  She passed on this afternoon, (Thursday). Her daughter Jo Ann has been my friend since childhood, and Josephine was like a second mom to me when I was growing up. Please keep Josie in your prayers as she goes through this loss. She has always been very close to her mother, and these past two years have been very rough on her since Josephine had a stroke two years ago new year's day and has been in a nursing home. The wake is tonight (Friday) and the funeral is Saturday morning so it will be a rough few days for her.
  
  Thank you for the previous e-mails and messages asking how things were going with her and for all the prayers.

  he estimated the damage to the car at around $1230... they have to replace the passenger side front fender, the front bumper, the headlight, the grille, the filler panel between the grille and the bumper, plus they have to paint and blend all the new paint into the old paint. He also said that the body shop may find other damage inside once they start pulling all this old stuff off. He said that they are supposed to provide me a rental while mine is being repaired as well. I'm pretty pleased with that and I think he's being on the up and up because I have the same insurance company as the other driver has. They have been unable to reach her because all the contact numbers she gave have been disconnected. They sent her a letter. I got a copy of the police report and had it faxed to the ins company today because since they've been unable to contact her, there was a "freeze" on the claim process because all they had to go on was my statement, and I understand that would be one-sided. So maybe since they have the police report now they can get the ball rolling. I'm personally tired of the stares and fits of laughter of people in public. Well, I'm off to get a hair trim. I think I'm gonna let it grow longer than it is now (it's short) but I need the bangs trimmed and a little shaping, plus my son has to have his ears lowered... LOL

  Was driving along this afternoon minding my own business when another driver pulled ut of the Walmart parking lot and drove right into the front of my car. I don't think there's any physical bodily damage, but my nerves are a wreck and my car isn't very pretty either. It's drivable, but it's gotta have some body repairs done. Was on my way to the car lot to see about trading it in on a van. The story of my life... when it rains, you'd better have a boat.

  We went to my Moms house Sunday and it was the last day of hunting season around here....so Richard went and sat out by the lake on my moms property and waited....he watched a few small bucks playing, then another one came out. Then the biggest of them all stepped out and walked towards them. He was a huge 7 point buck. Richard took aim when he felt it was time and pulled the trigger.... we were all at the house and heard the shot. We were playing cards and I was watching out the window, when I saw Richard walking up towards the house by the barn without his gun. I told them he musta got one.....so I ran out there and he was shaking.....I said what is wrong? Is he a big en'?? He said Terri you won't believe this, but I shot a 7 point buck and he was limping towards the woods and the smaller buck that was behind him was thrashing around and throwing his neck and running straight for me, and I knew I didn't shoot him. I shoot the 7 point buck.......well come to find out he shot 2 BUCKS with 1 SHOT!!!! That is so weird to me. Guess you just don;t hear about someone shooting two Bucks with one shot to often......so we will have a freezer full of meat for a while...anyone wanna come over for my famous deer meat chili??? mmmmm it is sooo good.

  Here's my list....
  
  1. A new bride.
  2. All the bills for the wedding.
  3. Stale, leftover cake.
  4. I got to drive to Illinois and back, then North Carolina and > back.(with step by step driving lessons from new bride)
  5. Got to fix 1 flat tire on the interstate in freezing rain. (with step by step instructions from new bride)
  6. Got instructed that everything in my kitchen was in wrong places. (Guess from who???)
  7. Got to move everything around in kitchen. (with step by step instructions from new bride)
  8. Got a surprise card from new bride. (with instructions on how to cook and clean for two)
  9. Got leads on two part-time jobs, 1st from 6 to midnight, second from 1 AM to 5 AM. (from new bride for her new wardrobe)
  10. Got laid once....

  Although I haven't been in touch much this year, a special hello to Angie, Miki, Char, Betty Lee, Laney, Sissi, Sassy and anyone else who I haven't mentioned. *smiles* I lost a big chunk of this year online due to being ill from an oral medicine my dermatologist put me on. It was used in conjunction with light treatment. Thank goodness, they have a new light machine in which doesn't require the medicine because I think I had most of the side effects and it hammered my immune system as well so I caught every virus around it seemed. My housemate/companion Lynn's Dad passed away a week ago last Monday after 2 months of surgeries and nasty complications so life was far from normal around here. It's amazing what piles up around the house when you don't get around to doing things regularly. My granddaughter, Rachel, is 4 years old now..wow! She's a sweetie. My son is graduating college at the end of this semester. My twin girls are doing well. They have all moved out to respective residences (and I thought life would be so peaceful this year LOL). We are far from ready for Christmas, I hope you are all better caught up then me. Hope to stay in touch more regularly now. Take care and have a sunshiney day. *hugs*

  The Blessing of the Thorns
  
  Sandra felt as low as the heels of her shoes as she pushed against a November gust and the florist shop door. Her life had been easy, like a spring breeze. Then in the fourth month of her second pregnancy, a minor automobile accident stole her ease.
  
  During this Thanksgiving week she would have delivered a son.
  
  She grieved over her loss. As if that weren't enough, her husband's company threatened a transfer. Then her sister, whose annual holiday visit she coveted, called saying she could not come.
  
  What's worse, Sandra's friend infuriated her by suggesting her grief was a God-given path to maturity that would allow her to empathize with others who suffer. "She has no idea what I'm feeling," thought Sandra with a shudder.
  
  "Thanksgiving? Thankful for what?" she wondered aloud. For a careless driver whose truck was hardly scratched when he rear-ended her? For an airbag that saved her life but took that of her child?
  
  "Good afternoon, can I help you?"
  
  The shop clerk's approach startled her.
  
  "I....I need an arrangement, "stammered Sandra. "For Thanksgiving?
  
  Do you want beautiful but ordinary, or would you like to challenge the day with a customer favorite I call the Thanksgiving Special?" asked the shop clerk.
  
  "I'm convinced that flowers tell stories," she continued.
  
  "Are you looking for something that conveys 'gratitude' this Thanksgiving?
  
  "Not exactly!" Sandra blurted out. "In the last five months, everything that could go wrong has gone wrong. " Sandra regretted her outburst, and was surprised when the shop clerk said, "I have the perfect arrangement for you."
  
  Then the door's small bell rang, and the shop clerk said, "Hi Barbara...let me get your order." She politely excused herself and walked toward a small workroom, then quickly reappeared, carrying an arrangement of greenery, bows, and long-stemmed thorny roses. Except the ends of the rose stems were neatly snipped...there were no flowers.
  
  "Want this in a box?" asked the clerk.
  
  Sandra watched for the customer's response. Was this a joke? Who would want rose stems with no flowers!?!
  
  She waited for laughter, but neither woman laughed. "Yes, please," Barbara replied with an appreciative smile. "You'd think after three years of getting the special, I wouldn't be so moved by its significance, but I can feel it right here, all over again," she said as she gently tapped her chest.
  
  "Uhh," stammered Sandra, "that lady just left with, uhh... she just left with no flowers!"
  
  "Right...I cut off the flowers. That's the Special... I call it the Thanksgiving Thorns Bouquet.
  
  "Oh, come on, you can't tell me someone is willing to pay for that?" exclaimed Sandra.
  
  "Barbara came into the shop three years ago feeling very much like you feel today," explained the clerk. "She thought she had very little to be thankful for. She had lost her father to cancer, the family business was failing, her son was into drugs, and she was facing major surgery."
  
  "That same year I had lost my husband, "continued the clerk," and for the first time in my life, I had to spend the holidays alone. I had no children, no husband, no family nearby, and too great a debt to allow any travel.
  
  "So what did you do?" asked Sandra. "I learned to be thankful for thorns," answered the clerk quietly. "I've always thanked God for good things in life and never thought to ask Him why those good things happened to me, but when bad stuff hit, did I ever ask! It took time for me to learn that dark times are important. I always enjoyed the 'flowers' of life, but it took thorns to show me the beauty of God's comfort. You know, the Bible says that God comforts us when we're afflicted, and from His consolation we learn to comfort others.
  
  "Sandra sucked in her breath as she thought about the very thing her friend had tried to tell her. "I guess the truth is I don't want comfort. I've lost a baby and I'm angry with God." Just then someone else walked in the shop.
  
  "Hey, Phil!" shouted the clerk to the balding, rotund man.
  
  "My wife sent me in to get our usual Thanksgiving arrangement ....twelve thorny, long-stemmed stems!" laughed Phil as the clerk handed him a tissue-wrapped arrangement from the refrigerator.
  
  "Those are for your wife?" asked Sandra incredulously. "Do you mind me asking why she wants something that looks like that?
  
  "No...I'm glad you asked," Phil replied. "Four years ago my wife and I nearly divorced. After forty years, we were in a real mess, but with the Lord's grace and guidance, we slogged through problem after problem. He rescued our marriage. Jenny here (the clerk) told me she kept a vase of rose stems to remind her of what she learned from "thorny" times, and that was good enough for me. I took home some of those stems. My wife and I decided to label each one for a specific "problem" and give thanks to Him for what that problem taught us."
  
  As Phil paid the clerk, he said to Sandra, "I highly recommend the Special!"
  
  "I don't know if I can be thankful for the thorns in my life." Sandra said to the clerk. "It's all too... fresh."
  
  "Well," the clerk replied carefully, "my experience has shown me that thorns make roses more precious. We treasure God's providential care more during trouble than at any other time. Remember, it was a crown of thorns that Jesus wore so we might know His love. Don't resent the thorns."
  
  Tears rolled down Sandra's cheeks. For the first time since the accident, she loosened her grip on resentment. "I'll take those twelve long-stemmed thorns, please," she managed to choke out.
  
  "I hoped you would," said the clerk gently. "I'll have them ready in a minute."
  
  "Thank you. What do I owe you?" asked Sandra.
  
  "Nothing." said the clerk.
  
  "Nothing but a promise to allow God to heal your heart. The first year's arrangement is always on me. "The clerk smiled and handed a card to Sandra.
  
  "I'll attach this card to your arrangement, but maybe you'd like to read it first."
  
  It read:
  
  "Dear God,
  I have never thanked you for my thorns. I have thanked you a thousand times for my roses, but never once for my thorns. Teach me the glory of the cross I bear; teach me the value of my thorns. Show me that I have climbed closer to you along the path of pain. Show me that, through my tears, the colors of your rainbow look much more brilliant.

  I think that I need to clear up something here. It seems, from e-mail I have received, that a few people think that I blame my friend for my depression, because of my post here in Oct. and there may be others who got that impression but did not write to me about it. That is NOT true at all. I have a chemical imbalance, and I just get really depressed sometimes. I do NOT blame my depression on my (at one time) very best friend, and I don't blame her for calling off our relationship as she did. What I tried to say in my earlier post was that because this person chose that particular time to end our relationship that I became more depressed, and it just continued to deepen, but because I am depressed and dyslexic too, it often gets hard for me to express myself in words.
  
  It's totally my fault that our relationship went sour, I could not give her what she wanted and needed from me at the time, so she had to do what she felt was best for her. The more down I got, the more moody I became, and the more dependent I became on her to be there for me. When she was not there anymore, I did not know how to handle the emptiness I felt, and I still don't. I now mourn the death of a truly beautiful relationship on top of everything else, and I must live with the knowledge that I killed it because I am selfish, agoraphobic and indecisive. (Don't try to understand that part, just accept it please, because I am too messed up and overtired to explain it anyhoot.) Just know that nobody else is responsible for the way I feel, it's my body's fault, but I am responsible for making others feel bad now. 8~( I am sorry I did that to some of you here too.
  
  One request before I go away. Please pray for my friend JoAnn that I told you about before. Her mom is much worse, failing more all the time, and Jo's having a hard time dealing with it. She needs all of the prayers that you can muster up here for strength in the coming days, weeks or however long it is. Please pray also for Josephine, her mom, that her pain will soon be gone.   Our local theater's production of Annie opens Friday (tomorrow) night and Kayla and myself are both in it. It's been late nights getting home, and only have about 15 minutes between work and back to the theater for rehearsal. I'm exhausted and will be ever so thankful when Sunday the 18th is over. Maybe I'll remember what my home is supposed to be like and can enjoy some quiet time. Not likely with the holidays rapidly approaching, but hey, a girl can dream can't she!

  Mud Puddles and Dandelions
  
  When I look at a patch of dandelions, I see a bunch of weeds that are
  going to take over my yard. My kids see flowers for Mom and
  blowing white fluff you can wish on.
  
  When I look at an old drunk and he smiles at me, I see a smelly, dirty
  person who probably wants money and I look away. My kids see
  someone smiling at them and they smile back.
  
  When I hear music I love, I know I can't carry a tune and don't have
  much rhythm so I sit self consciously and listen. My kids feel the
  beat and move to it. They sing out the words. If they don't know them,
  they make up their own.
  
  When I feel wind on my face, I brace myself against it. I feel it
  messing up my hair and pulling me back when I walk. My kids close
  their eyes, spread their arms and fly with it, until they fall to the
  ground laughing.
  
  When I pray, I say thee and thou and grant me this, give me that. My
  kids say, "Hi God! Thanks for my toys and my
  friends. Please keep the bad dreams away tonight. Sorry, I don't want to
  go to Heaven yet. I would miss my Mommy and Daddy."
  
  When I see a mud puddle I step around it. I see muddy shoes and dirty
  carpets. My kids sit in it. They see dams to build, rivers to cross
  and worms to play with.
  
  I wonder if we are given kids to teach or to learn from? No wonder God
  loves the little children!!
  
  "Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and
  realize they were the big things."
