Subject: maybe interrupting...
In reply to: Rowan 's message, "Tia? Tia who?" on 23:16:42 11/12/01 Mon

Present company certainly is interesting, Sarra noted in amusement, nibbling on her second sandwich and discreetly eavesdropping on the conversation of Laurel and Erlic. After all, they weren’t being especially private about it, so she didn’t find what she was doing disreputable. The conversation fascinated her, anyway, especially Erlic’s highlights on the life of a thief. She’d almost followed Ravin and Rowan, as something alcoholic was a tempting thought to contemplate, but the words these two spoke were too enticing for her to resist. She liked listening to the voices of educated people slightly rose to argumentative tones. It always helped if she ever need impersonate someone of wealth and status.

Stifling a yawn, Sarra settled back in her chair comfortably, her mind dividing, as it often did, into two halves: one that could absorb nearly ever nuance of the current goings-on, and the other, more conscious half, which allowed her to roam through her thoughts and memories freely. It was a skill that had taken time and practice to hone, and was one thing Sarra’s brother had insisted she learn…he had, after all, done all of her immediate training as far as stealth and fighting, and he had been one of the most difficult teachers to please, simply because he expected perfection from someone so closely related to himself. This allowed her to be fully aware and awake in the case of a long vigil, where she could keep entertained yet bring all senses to the alert at the smallest sign of wrong. It also kept her sharp and prepared for anything during the slow periods in the midst of a disguise; she could be nodding and listening to small talk over the rim of her silver glass and plotting her next move at the same moment.

Not that Sarra had done much work like that…most of what She did involved the dead, undead, or inanimate objects that randomly attacked her. This was a different kind of magic, one she didn’t have a problem dealing with, as were the tricks and traps of the ancients that were clever, but not quite so advanced as what the modern mage could concoct. There were, admittedly, certain cultures from days long past that had magic down to a mastered art, but she had found only a few, and despite their trickery, had risen victorious.

Thinking of her profession, however, had her itching for another look at that box…and she’d more or less promised she wouldn’t take it, and she didn’t trust herself in its presence. Anxious for a distraction, she left the table with a nod for the eyes she attracted and slipped into the kitchen, where she found Rowan and Ravin sitting on the floor, each nursing a bottle, and their posture and expression suggesting they were surprisingly affected in a time fairly short.

Feeling a little like an intruder, but never one to show discomfort, Sarra gave a bland smile of greeting and glanced around. “Where’s the liquor cabinet I heard someone mention?”
