Ravin spun his head around when he heard someone enter the room. In his drunken state of mind, he had forgotten to close the door but it didn't matter since Erlic's appearance really didn't bother him. Of course, he would have preferred solitude, mainly because he didn't think he made very good company when he was in one of his depressed moods. It was hard to maintain his carefree persona at such times. At least Erlic wasn't much of a talker so the chances were good that he wouldn't mind if Ravin didn't prove to be a magnificent conversationalist tonight.

He narrowed his eyes a bit when he saw Erlic guzzling from a wine bottle. It was very unusual to see the older thief doing such a thing. Ravin often found himself thinking that his fellow thief had the truly awesome ability to nurse a single glass of wine for the entire evening! Why don't I have such control? he mused; retrieving his own bottle from the floor and taking a good-sized gulp of the potent whiskey it held.

"So tell me Ravin," Erlic said, "why do I have problems with women, and is there anything that I should be doing to correct my dilemma?"

Ravin pulled the bottle away from his lips and stared at his friend. So, that was the problem! Well, now the bottle of wine in Erlic's hand certainly made sense. Only a woman could make a man want to drown himself in drink. Or maybe even drown himself in the nearest ocean for that matter!

He wiped his mouth in a sleeve then rose from his chair to join Erlic on the floor. While watching his friend drain more of the wine, his lips quirked up into a smile. Now that he was filled with concern for Erlic, his own depression was temporarily forgotten. "You're asking the wrong person about women," he said, feeling a bit amused by the notion that Erlic came to him for advice. "Hell, my marriage fell apart after only a year remember?"

After swallowing down more whiskey, Ravin stared off into space completely at a loss for any words of wisdom to give his friend. "Who the hell can understand women?" he finally said. "They think you're too soft if you act nice all the time, yet they get upset when you're being macho. They want attention then feel smothered when you give them too much of it. If you buy them a present they think its because you're guilty over doing something wrong but if you DON'T get them anything, they say you're cheap and uncaring."

Ravin shook his head then let out a laugh. "I really shouldn't say such things cause I'm only going by what I've seen from my adopted sisters. The only woman I ever really got close to was Kyri so I've no right to judge them all by what I've experienced with her. If I did that then I'd probably never want to get involved with another woman, because I'd be nagged by the fear of……of being so deeply and utterly hurt again."

The two thieves clinked their bottles together then downed more of the liquor. Ravin massaged his weary eyes then held his breath when he felt a hiccup coming on. Once the sensation subsided he drained the rest of the whiskey, setting the empty bottle down beside him before leaning his back against the bed and closing his eyes. "All I can say is, try treating a woman as your equal. Become her friend before anything else. Share a couple of drinks with her, get her to talk, and don't try to analyze anything she has to say."

Ravin popped one eye open to find Erlic grabbing a pillow off the bed, and placing it on the floor. The older thief finished his wine then laid down staring up at the ceiling. When the room began to spin, Ravin slammed his eye shut and sank to the floor as well, using his arm as a cushion for his head. "Just take things slow," he muttered. "And, don't try to impress her in any way because she'll probably think you're trying to prove to her that you're better than she is, even though that's the furthest thing from the truth." After yawning into his sleeve, Ravin tried to think of something more to say, but suddenly his mind went blank and he slipped into a deep, liquor-induced sleep.

When hot sunlight, beating down upon his face, woke him several hours later, Ravin groaned and rolled onto his stomach. His throat was parched, and someone was beating on an anvil in his head. He felt feverish, and needed something to put out the fire that seemed to rage throughout his body.

Too weak to stand at the moment, he crawled out of the room to the stairwell at the far end of the hall. He turned his back to the steps and eased his way down on his knees then crawled to the bathing rooms he remembered seeing in his earlier explorations with Sarra. He paid no attention to the signs over the open doors that read, Men and Women since he couldn't read anyway and simply made his way into the room closest to him.

When his bleary eyes caught sight of the huge pool of water, he almost smiled but such an action would hurt too much right now. Still on his hands and knees, he moved forward and let himself topple into the water. Although it wasn’t very cold, it cooled down his body a little and helped a bit of rational thought to filter through his muddled brain.

When he finally found steps leading out from the sunken tub, he staggered up them and came to a stop before a liquor cart. Thank the gods there was a jug of juice among the other more potent beverages! He popped off the cork cap, blew wet hair away from his mouth then took a very long drink that somewhat soothed his ultra dry throat. After haphazardly replacing the jug, he laid his soaking wet, fully clothed body on the floor and passed out again.
