Laurel’s was touched by Argus’ apparent shyness, though she couldn’t possibly comprehend why a man his age should be so bashful. Maybe the people on his world were very modest. She supposed that must be the case. And wasn’t he a priest of some sort? Good gods—perhaps he’d even taken a vow of chastity! She tried to smother her giggle behind one hand.

She smiled obligingly when he mentioned being around beautiful women, but the expression turned into a scowl when he suddenly dared her to a race and took off before she could realize what he was doing.

“Oh!” she cried, spluttering slightly, “Why, you little cheater…” Valiantly, she swam after him, but of course, she was no athlete. He was grinning at her, treading water by the rocky side of the pool as she came panting up, her reddish orange hair plastered all over her breasts and shoulders.

“You wicked creature!” she chastised playfully, still trying to catch her breath. She smiled back at him, pleased to see that he seemed to have lost some of his earlier shyness. “That quite tired me out,” she admitted, and she moved to pull herself out of the water, wringing out the thick mass of her wet hair over one shoulder before standing. “And I smell dinner cooking, I think. Let’s go have a bite to eat before the others steal our share.”

She offered him her hand to help lift him out of the pool, and together they made their way to the cook fires the Jann had set up. Argus seemed horribly uncomfortable about walking around in his underclothes. She noticed as well how his eyes kept flicking toward her, too, but politely chose to say nothing about it.

“Are all humans on your world as modest as you are?” she asked, giving him a teasing smile as they sat down together, each with a plate in their hands. “We used to make fun of them, you know. Humans.”

She laughed, ever so gently. “The mere sight of one of our bathhouses would stun them so much they could scarcely speak for five minutes. And they thought we were absolutely barbaric, though we naturally considered ourselves ten times more civilized than they were.”

She laughed again, thinking about how silly people could be when each was faced with a culture the other didn’t quite understand. “What about the elves?” she asked, almost as an afterthought, as she speared a piece of meat. “What are they like where you come from, Argus?”
