Tristan thought he was going to gag when Tia started to go on about Rowan’s “gorgeous blue eyes” and how he made her feel funny inside. He really hated that guy, especially when he was calling him names and making fun of him. He couldn’t possibly understand what a nice girl like Tia saw in an asshole like that, but he guessed it was really none of his business.

The nauseated feeling almost got the best of him when she even hinted that Rowan might be interested in Jeremy of all people! How the hell could anyone manage to become attracted to that pesky, skinny-legged, nosy little brat of a human? Granted, even though he was a conceited jerk, Rowan wasn’t really a bad looking guy, so what made him think he had to pursue a good-for-nothing little prick like Jeremy?

All thoughts of the unlikely couple fled his mind, though, when Tia suddenly rushed forward to hug him. “Thanks for listening to me,” she said, before backing off and promising to be there for him the next time he needed someone to talk to.

“Oh,” he said, feeling his face turning slightly pink. “Thank you.” He still felt slightly mystified by her behavior—she talked even more than Marz did!—but he decided to speak up anyway as they were heading out the tent.

“I don’t think it’s any of your fault,” he said slowly, walking beside her. “I mean, you’re very pretty for a girl.” Damn it! He felt like kicking himself. Why did he always have to go and add that for a girl part?

“It’s just guys, you know,” he said, shrugging and trying to ignore his own embarrassment. “Sometimes…well, sometimes we kind of act like jerks to the people we like the most.” He paused, trying to gather his thoughts together, and wondered if it would be prudent to offer personal experience. But he just didn’t know her that well, and he wasn’t the type to blurt out his personal feelings to just any old person.

Then again, maybe if he tried to be vague about it, to sort of beat around the bush where his own emotions were concerned, she might understand.

“The way I see it,” he continued, “you can do one of three things. One, you could say to hell with him and just forget it.” Otherwise referred to as ‘running away,’ he thought miserably, memories of his painful relationship with his teacher coming back. “Two, you could just keep things the way they are and try and be his friend.” That had worked out well enough with Eremis, but maybe that was only because Marz had come along to steal the show.

“Or, three…” He looked down at her, a somewhat secretive smile on his face, “Three is my favorite. He keeps stringing you along, right? So after awhile you get tired of his slip ups and oblique references to how much he likes you, and you just go and make the first move. The toughest guys, you know, are really pretty soft underneath, otherwise they wouldn’t be chasing after you in the first place.”

He thought about his words and was satisfied with them, nodding slightly to himself. Marz had spent the night with Kaja the very day before he and Tristan slept together for the first time. So maybe just because Rowan was still flirting with other people didn’t mean he wasn’t interested in her. He wanted to share that little tidbit of helpful personal informaiton, but knew his face would start flaming red as usual, so he kept his mouth shut.

“Well, what do you think?” he asked her, as they finally drew up beside the line of camels waiting to be loaded down with supplies and mounted. He stared warily up at the hairy beasts, frowning as the closest ones caught his scent and started snorting with fear, the whites of their eyes showing ever so slightly. Stupid beasts, he thought. Just because they knew what he really was didn’t mean they had to freak out about it. He preferred horses, anyway, and wouldn’t even consider munching on a camel unless there was nothing left. Somehow, though, he didn’t think that would make them feel any better even if he’d been able to tell them that.
