“You and I are riding together.”

Tristan raised both eyebrows at Marz, who promptly turned and selected the closest camel, not even bothering to wait for a response to his thinly veiled command. “Yes, master,” Tristan muttered, rolling his eyes once his back was safely turned. He realized the first chakra was probably having a field day with Marz’s already normally bossy attitude, but he didn’t really mind it much. If anybody else ever got it into their head to tell Tristan what to do, he wouldn’t waste two seconds giving them a piece of his mind with his sharp tongue.

Naturally, Marz was another story entirely. He quickly did as he was bid and mounted the camel silently, scooting up on the saddle somewhat so that another rider could fit comfortably behind him. The animal didn’t look too happy to be carrying him as its rider, since he still smelled like the dangerous predator he was, even if he were in human form right now. Luckily, it chose to be cooperative, and when he felt Marz settle down behind him, the camel rose to its full height, trudging off to follow its companions once the others were mounted as well.

Although he knew he himself would never actually allow it, he found himself wishing Marz would inch a bit closer and maybe even wrap his arms around him. It was still pretty cold, and now that they were moving, there was a constant breeze whipping at their faces. It was also fairly dark, so no one would notice if he…he tossed his head and snorted softly at his own foolishness. He and Marz had plenty of time to get close when they were alone, without the prying eyes of their friends and companions watching over them. He staunchly assured himself that he didn’t abstain from public affection because he was shy, but because it was simply undignified.

“I can’t tell you,” he finally spoke up, in answer to Marz’s question about Tia. “I think it’s supposed to be a secret. Just girl stuff, you know.”

Immediately, he realized how bad that sounded and hurried to amend his own words. “Maybe not girl stuff. Just something she wanted to get off her chest, I guess.” He shifted somewhat uncomfortably on the saddle, unconsciously leaning back against Marz somewhat. “I think maybe she considers me her friend.” He paused again briefly, before adding, “I’ve…never had a girl for a friend before.”

He yawned and glanced at the half-moon, suddenly feeling sleepy again. Not a big surprise, since it was past the middle of the night, and he’d only gotten a couple hours of sleep. Every now and then, the sheik would practice his ridiculous growl, causing Tristan to jerk forward somewhat, startled out of nearly falling asleep. Eventually, though, the easy gate of the camel lulled him into unconsciousness, and he slumped comfortably against Marz for the last hour or so, snoring ever so lightly.

Ardesmar’s voice startled him into full awareness again, and he straightened self-consciously, trying to blink the sleep out of his eyes. But when the sudden frenzy of black arrows, preceded by a loud, thundering of hooves, began to reign down to land right before their very toes, he was definitely wide-awake. Immediately, his nose picked up the scent of horsemeat, and he felt his stomach growl before he could try to silence it.

Needless to say, centaurs were probably the last thing he was expecting as their aggressors finally came forward to show themselves. He cast the sheik a scathing look when the big man grunted out his fake ogre yell, obviously not fooling the centaurs one little bit. After a while, they all decided it would be prudent to dismount and attempt to prove their innocence. Tristan wasn’t too happy about putting his hands over his head as if he were a defeated enemy, but since everybody else was doing it, he went along, too.

Once it was clear that everybody was apparently on the same side, the lead centaur invited them to her people’s camp, promising to later tell them about those for whom they had been previously mistaken, a hostile group referred to simply as “the Sharm.” Tristan couldn’t stop staring at her and the other centaur mares, shaking his head with contempt. Imagine running around half-naked like they did, as if they didn’t care one bit who saw them! Yeah, all right, so maybe they were just a bunch of horses at heart, but that didn’t mean they had to go and throw all the rules of decent society to the wind like that.

Tristan had cause to be disturbed anew when one of the male centaurs rushed forward to set a bowl of what looked suspiciously like friend snakes before them before hurrying off again. Immediately, he started to feel slightly nauseated, and he took an inadvertent step backward.

“I am not going to eat that disgusting excuse for a meal,” he growled, crossing his arms defiantly. A couple of the centaurs gave him dirty looks, but he ignored them. Better to let them think he was just being arrogant and high-minded instead revealing the truth about his own petty fears!
