Author: Isobel and Barry
Subject: The sand which is here

Isobel looked out over the desert as the camel train made its way toward the Sea of Salt. She found the stark beauty of the landscape to be somehow entrancing. Her eyes wandered along the line of camels, lighting on the various people she had gotten to know over the last several days.

She wondered how long they had all known each other. Were they a group that had assembled themselves just for this purpose? Or had they all fallen together pretty much as she had stumbled into their midst? Certainly the skull, Barry, was a newcomer (she had been present when he had arrived, after all). But Ravin and Erlic and some of the others had apparently known each other for quite some time.

Her mind wandered back to the people she had known and loved over the years. She realized with a twinge of sadness that while she had liked many of her acquaintances and friends, she had never really loved anyone but her father. And, of course, Juan. But her father had died and Juan had betrayed her with that puta while she was away from the village acting as a bodyguard to a wealthy but stupid merchant. Again her hand strayed to the locket she wore. Why did she keep it? It only served to remind her of what Juan had done. But... perhaps that was the reason. As long as she remembered, she would not make the same mistake again.

Isobel was startled out of her reverie by a hail of arrows which stopped the camel train.

. "In the name of the Awati Clan, I command you to dismount and raise your hands in the air, far away from your weapons." A voice that was unmistakably female called out. The foolish Sheik chose that moment to attempt his idiotic Ogre impersonation (as if anyone with eyes would truly be fooled by such a ridiculous disguise!). "URGH!" he shouted. The owner of the voice was not impressed, and thus Isobel's opinion of her rose.

"You have sixty arrows pointed at you," the female called out. "Now, do as I say! Dismount and raise your hands in the air."

The party did as they were told. Isobel sighed, raising her hands over her head. The female emerged from behind a boulder and... Isobel gaped. She was a centaur!

Once the business about their status was settled, the group followed the centaurs back to their camp. "You may lead your camels rather than ride since we do not have far to go." Ebessa told them. After walking for half a mile, Isobel muttered to Laurel, who was leading her camel next to her, "Perhaps not far for hooved people. It is relative, I think."

They arrived at the centaur camp without incident and once their camels were secure everyone congregated around the fire. Isobel found nowhere to really sit, since the centaurs did have such a need, so she crossed her legs and sat on the ground near the fire, quietly chewing on the moon snakes, which were actually quite tasty.

She wondered who these "Sharm" were and what they were doing in one of the towers of the city they sought. She supposed that these questions would be answered in time, and she got up, moving over to where Ravin sat.

"How are you feeling, Seņor Ravin?" she said as she sat back down, her dark eyes turning to him. He simply smiled as his mouth was full, so she went on, feeling talkative for some reason. "Have you heard of these 'Sharm'? And since we are on the subject, I would like to know a little more about this city to which we are heading. It is a ruin, no? So... what happened to it and why has no one removed the treasure before now?"

*~*~*~*~*

Barry floated along next to Corum, yacking happily about the hot Jann babes and their scented oil. The way he talked, you'd think he had been ravished by one of them rather than simply given a bath. But hey... these cutters didn't need to know that!

When the arrows came flying at the caravan Barry leapt backward. "Yow! Hey those things are sharp!" he howled as one of the arrows nearly scraped him.

The voice that called out to them to get off their camels and put up their hands sounded feminine and Barry grinned. When Ebessa emerged from behind the rock and Barry got a look at her and the other centaur chits he let out a low moan. "Ooooh baby they're topless!" he gasped. "Pinch me, I must be dreaming!"

When Ebessa grinned up at him he turned to Corum. "Oh yeah! Chief did you see that? She wants me! Can barely keep her eyes off me!" He clacked his teeth lewdly.

Finally they followed the centairs back to their oasis camp, Barry floating alongside one of the more... well-endowed centaur ladies. "So baby... wanna tumble me to the hows and whats of centaur mating habits? I'm a quick study..." he grinned, rolling his eyes at her. Apparently the gal was unimpressed, because she stuck her nose in the air and ignored him.

"Dames!" Barry muttered and floated back over beside Corum. "Damn snooty if you ask me," he told Yorik. "Don't even think of tryin with them."
