Tia sighed while wiping sweat from her brow. The dip in the pond had cooled her off earlier, but now it felt like the hot sun would fry the skin from her bones any minute. After lunch, she might just return to the pond to refresh herself again before taking a nap. Thankfully, the trees in the area were no longer burning. Tia had the feeling that Ebessa's sister, Narur had used magic to extinguish the flames. Moments ago she had seen Narur leaving the copse of trees by the pond, looking extremely fatigued.

She winced when she noticed another group of centaurs gathering up the remains of two of their brethren that had been torn apart by the assassin's vile magic. Apparently, they were going to bury them near their huts where some male centaurs were busy digging graves. Wretched assassins! They were the cause of the deaths and destruction that filled the oasis. Briefly, she regretted rescuing Alakbar then hung her head, shamed by such a thought. The young prince didn't deserve to spend the rest of his life in a mountain prison. Whoever was behind his kidnapping should be beheaded! The thought surprised Tia because she wasn't a vindictive person. Maybe she was changing.

Her thoughts shifted to Marz when Valhorek began to examine him. A large bolt of lightening must have hit the poor kid. That seemed to be the only explanation for the way he looked at the moment. She whispered a prayer to the goddess of health for his swift recovery then thanked Erlic for the plate of food he handed her. As she chewed a piece of the delicious fish, she watched Marz get carted off to a magical tent Corum had erected. It was hard to believe that less than an hour ago everyone was having fun and enjoying the lush oasis to the fullest. Now they all sat near the campfire with sullen looks upon their faces.

She glanced at Laurel when she started to cry then found herself wiping tears from her own cheeks. The entire group was trying to put on a brave front, but Tia knew they were all hurting inside. Tristan had to be suffering the worse since the person he loved was on the verge of death at this very moment.

The petite thief set down her plate and headed for the tent that housed the dragon and Marz. Tristan shouldn't be alone right now. He would need a friend nearby to comfort him if Marz…….if Marz didn't pull through this time. She swallowed the lump in her throat and entered the tent, rushing up to kneel beside Tristan. "It's okay to cry," she said when she saw him quickly wipe tears from his eyes.

After taking a closer look at Marz, she had to bite her lip to stop herself from sobbing. The ex-gang leader looked like a shadow of his former vibrant, healthy self. Her parents had that same peaceful look on their faces before they surrendered to death. Tia blinked back tears. She had to be strong for Tristan's sake.

Once she got her emotions under control, she took the dragon's hand and placed it on Marz's burnt chest. "Let him know you're here," she whispered. "Remind him that he has a reason to live and that that reason is you. Tell him that you love him and won't allow him to leave you now!"

Tia brushed a tear from her cheek and stared at Tristan. "Order him to come back before he goes too far and can't hear you anymore. He's stubborn, Tristan, but he always listens to you in the end, so tell him what to do before it's too late!"
